Mother of Sorrows Parish at Catawba Avenue, Put-in-Bay, OH 43456 US - SANCTUARY

SANCTUARY

Just in front of the first pew on the left is a recently restored statue of St. Anthony.  This statue is from the old church, and except for the candelabra, and the pews in the balcony, is one of the very few items retained from that structure.

Further along the left wall and just into the Sanctuary near the floor is the dedicatory marble inscription in Latin "DEO MATRIQUE DOLOROSAE DICTIM ANNO SALVTIS 1928".

The hand carved and polished main altar is a beautiful one ton piece of Italian Florentine marble.  This was donated by Edward Miller in 1931, who at the time was a summer resident of Sugar Island.  Three Crosses can be seen carved into the front of the altar.  Except for the door, the tabernacle is carved of the same Florentine marble.

The candlesticks on the altar are of carved yellow poplar wood.  These, as well as the Easter candlestick, were fashioned by island wood carver Bruno Webber and guilded by Gerhart Lamar.

To the rear of the altar, and dominating the entire real wall of the church is an exquisitely carved, 12 foot tall, crucifix of gray Italian marble.  On each side of the major cross are three minor carvings which all together represent the seven individual sorrows of the Mater Dolorosa, the Mother of Sorrows.
