Mother of Sorrows Parish at Catawba Avenue, Put-in-Bay, OH 43456 US - ABOVE THE ALTAR

ABOVE THE ALTAR

High above the altar is a classical fresco representation of the Blessed Trinity.  God the Father wears a triple tiara symbolizing His universal rule.  The Dove is a symbol of God the Holy Spirit.  The open arms of God the Father and the outspread wings of the Dove embrace the tabernacle below wherein the Son of God is present in the Blessed Sacrament.  The triangle is the symbol of the Triune God.  The "alpha" and "omega" are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet and symbolize the eternity of God, the First Cause and the Last End.  The angel holding a crown in his hands indicates that Christ is King of Kings.  The remainder of the painting, and all the interior church decoration, which was done by Gebhard Lamarr in 1930, is filled with so many other equally rich symbolisms  that it could easily be the topic of  a separate information sheet.

Mr. Lamar used genuine gold foil to decorate the ceiling trusses and numerous other parts of the church.  Many of our present parishioners remember that as a child they would visit church every day after school and zealously search for the tiny scraps of foil that would fall to the floor.

The original reed organ was replaced in 1950 and that second organ was replaced by an electronic organ in 1989.
