In 1959 the parish still owed $28,000 on its $30,000 original construction financing. Money was extremely tight on the island during the Great Depression and until after World War II. In those years there was no parish house and the priests lived in the basement of the church.
In 1960, Fr. Stopko wrote "my living room is the former coal bin. My dining room, kitchen and bathroom is the boiler room. There are no windows in my basement quarters and the humidity and lack of ventilation are certainly not conducive to good health". Ten years later the Parish House was built.
