Mother of Sorrows Parish at Catawba Avenue, Put-in-Bay, OH 43456 US - CARILLON

CARILLON

On the evening of December 9, 1983, a medical emergency occured on Kellys Island.  The Life-Flight helicopter from Toledo had been called, but was grounded because of bad weather, Emergency Medical Team No. 1 from Put-In-Bay responded immediately.  The team consisted of Duane Dress, Bruce Mettler, Robert Rigoni and Michael Sweeney.  Their plane never made it to Kellys Island, and all four men perished in the water between the islands.  In 1984, a drive was begun to erect a suitable Memorial to the memory of these brave men.  The Bell Tower and Carillon was erected in 1989 at a cost of $110,000 and was dedicated in a solumn ceremony Sunday, August 26, 1990.  The pastors of both Mother of Sorrows and St. Paul's Episcopal Church officiated.  The Carillon bells and music can be heard over the entire island on still winter nights.
