St Vincent de Paul Society of St Mary/Our Lady Of Hope
St Vincent de Paul Society was started April, 1991 in Summerton, SC on St. Mary's Catholic Church property along with St. Mary's Closet and is called St. Mary's Conference of St. Vincent de Paul Society. The Society distributes food once per month to qualified recipients which is provided by the Federal Emergency Food Progam and donations from organizations, individuals, fund raising through Bi Lo Booster Programs.Approximately 50% of the funds received are from FEMA and the rest from the Society. Poor boxes from Our Lady Of Hope church, St. Mary's church, and St. Annes church are used by the Society for various charities.
On average (with the help of a strictly volunteer group) 260 families per month (this translates to about 850 individuals) receive food distributions.
The elderly, poor, or disabled are assisted with food and other necessities of life. Eligibiliy is based on federal government qualifications. St Vincent de Paul serves the needy in the 29148 and 29102 zip codes.
Our food is purchased from Harvest Hope Food Bank in Florence. The food is generally distibuted on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at the St Marys Parish center in Summerton, SC. Distributed foods include meat (beef, pork, chicken, and fish), fruit, and vegetables (fresh, canned, and frozen).
In 2008, 44% of food coming to Clarendon County from Harvest Hope was distributed by St. Marys Conference of St Vincent de Paul in Summerton and we thank eveyone who participates with their time, talents, and treasures.
The Society also assists the Migrant School in Manning, SC with food and clothing upon their arrival in the area to harvest our farmers' crops.
Our achievements in feeding the hungry and clothing the poor are because of the volunteers love of neighbor. The Society salutes all of you for your collective effort in helping others.
