Northern Virginia Catholic Library Association at 2901 Popkins Lane, Alexandria, VA 22306 US - Free MARC Records

Free MARC Records

From "Roberta Library,"

Go to: http://www.sckls.info/sysserv/tutorials/marc/freemarc.html for information on links to free sources of MARC records to download into your automated systems.  There are also tutorials on the site to give you the "how-tos" on downloading and importing these records into your automation system.  You will have to consult the handbook for your own automation system as well, but, once mastered, the process can save a lot of time (and money!) in cataloging.

The neat part is that, unlike the Library of Congress, some of these sites have GREAT AV and religious book collections, and cover books not published in the USA!  Ones I have used a lot are:

Access Pennsylvania (includes Catholic Schools in the database, so there are many saint books and religious books in their MARC)

OhioLink (AV records for common school-related instructional programs, lots of school libraries)

Maine InfoNet (Like OhioNet, but smaller, lots of school libraries)

Several public libraries (Good for paperbacks)

There is another group of free MARC sources avaiable at http://www.nassauboces.org/nsls/greatsites/FreeMarc.htm

I tend to print out these sites and keep them on file.  The sckls site keeps changing its URL and finding it again can be a challenge, so keeping the hard copy handy prevents frustration!
