PRO-CHOICE AND CHURCH TEACHING

Corinne E. Steinbauer

FCCW Stem Cell Chair

As Mother Teresa "reminded us on many of her visits to the U.S., abortion tears at our national soul. It is the betrayal of our nation's founding principle that recognizes all human beings as "created equal" and "endowed with unalienable rights." What evil could be so grave and widespread as to constitute a support for individuals who would preserve and protect the abortion license and even extend it to publicity junded embryo-falling in our nation's labs."

Pope Benedict, when he was Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, stated: "That a Catholic needs to look at the teaching of the church: The direct killing of innocent human beings at any stage of development, including the embryonic and fetal, is homicidal, gravely sinful and always profoundly wrong."

Archbishop John Myers states: "Then we must consider the scope of the evil of abortion today in our country. America suffers 1.3 million abortions each year, a tragedy of epic proportions. Moreover, many supporters of abortion propose makingJhe situation even worse by creating a publicly funded industry in which tens of thousands of human lives are produced each year for the purpose of being "sacrificed" in biomedical research... Abortion and embryo-destructive research are intrinsic and grave evils; no Catholic may legitimately support them. In the context of contemporary American social life, abortion and embryo-destructive research are disproportionate evils. They are the gravest human rights abuses of our domestic politics and what slavery was to the time of Lincoln. Catholics are called by the Gospel of Life to protect the victims of these human rights abuses. They may not legitimately abandon the victims for these callings."

When Catholics study and understand the facts that to get an embryo stem cell there must be 46 chromosomes. Each living person as the 46 chromosomes. It takes two full 23 pairs, which happen at the time of conception whether in the mother's womb or in a dish in the lab. The 46 chromosomes is the creation of life. How do you remove one stem cell without destroying the human? Once a human has been created, to take only one part is to kill what is left. As Catholic women, our responsibility is to share what we know with others. When God made you and me, he broke the mold. We are an important person. We nke to believe that we count for something, if we fail to do anything, it will not be done as no one can replace us with the gifts that God has given us.
