1991 RESOLUTIONS

THEME

WHEREAS, the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women wish to affirm the convention theme, "Vision to Make a Difference," and

WHEREAS, the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 1, vs. 30, 31, & 38, tells us that when the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and said, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus... And Mary said be it done to me according to your word;" therefore, be it

RESOLVED that we, the Council of Catholic Women, will accept the challenge to make a difference in our homes, communities, and in the world; that we will respond to God's call, just as Mary did, and meet the challenges set before us with faith, hope and love.

 

WINKIE LE FILS

WHEREAS, Winkle LeFils has been appointed to serve another four years as the NCCW Representative to WUCWO (World Union of Catholic Women's Organizations), serving as Chairman of the Human Rights Commission; and

WHEREAS, the General Assembly for WUCWO will be held in neighboring Mexico, September 19 through September 27, and the United States has planned the liturgy for the opening Mass; and

WHEREAS, the lifting of the iron curtain, and the destruction of the Berlin wall enables us to reach out to our Sisters in Christ; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that we will give Winkie our love and support as she reaches out to the women throughout the world in our name; that we will make an effort to attend the WUCWO General Assembly and to send our leaders; and that we pray and support our fellow Catholics in Europe as they rebuild their churches and Christian communities.

 

NCCW 70TH ANNIVERSARY

WHEREAS, The National Council of Catholic Women have recently celebrated their 70th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, the National Council of Catholic Women prepares for the National Convention, September 15-18, in Dallas, Texas, with their Theme "Let Justice Surge Like Water," therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women continue to support the work of the National Council, and continue to feed the organization with our reports, ideas, love, and commitment; and that we will make every effort to attend this convention and to send our leaders.

 

KATHY BONNER

WHEREAS, Kathy Bonner, serves as the National Council of Catholic Woman's Organization Services Commission Chairman, be it

RESOLVED that we are very proud of all she has done, and we will continue to support her with our love and prayers and to ask God to let her touch many lives with the "Vision to Make a Difference."

 

JULIE DRAKE

WHEREAS, Julie Drake organizes the Personal Development Team for the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women; and

WHEREAS, the team presents seminars throughout the Diocese to give our members the tools to lead with love, justice and confidence; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that we give our thanks to Julie and the Personal Development Team for sharing their time and talents with ODCCW, and we accept the challenge to lead as Christ did and pray that we have the "Vision to Make a Difference."

 

ELLEN BACHMAN AND JUNE SAYERS

WHEREAS, Ellen Bachman serves as Secretary for the Florida Council of Catholic Women, and June Sayers serves as Treasurer for the NCCW Associates; THEREFORE, be it

RESOLVED that we thank them for their willingness to serve and pledge them our support.

 

QUENCENTENNARY

WHEREAS, we will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the new world when Christopher Columbus landed in the Dominican Republic; and

WHEREAS. the celebration of this quincentenary offers us an opportunity to reflect on our ethnic diversity - native American, Spanish, Italian, French, English - and to rediscover that the strength of our nation and Church lies in part in that diversity, in our ability as Christians and Americans to live together in harmony, protecting the weak and fostering the com­mon good; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that we support Bishop Edward McCarthy, who is actively promoting the quincentenary, and his efforts toward evangelization through this celebration.

 

ENVIRONMENT

WHEREAS, our environment suffers a slow death from pollution, waste, and a lack of concern for our wildlife and planet; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the Council of Catholic Women across the Diocese will make every effort to recycle, become less of a "throw away society," support legislation to help the environment, and do whatever possible to help our planet Earth.

 

SISTER DIOCESE

WHEREAS, Faye Johnson, Diocesan President, and Dorothy Downey, Immediate Past President, visited our Sister Diocese in San Juan de la Maguana, representing the women of the Orlando Diocese, expressing our love, concern, and continue willingness to help; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that our Woman-to-Woman project will continue to meet the needs of the women and their families, and we continue to show our love and commitment through the Woman-to-Woman project.

 

BISHOP NORBERT DORESEY

WHEREAS, Bishop Norbert Dorsey, the new Shepherd of the Diocese of Orlando, joins us at his first ODCCW con­vention; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that we pledge him our support and love and welcome him into our Council family.

 

25TH ANNIVERSARY OF FR, GERARD GRANAHAN AND FR. ROBERT FUCHEK

WHEREAS, Father Gerard Granahan, moderator of Western Deanery Council of Catholic Women, and Father Robert Fuchek, moderator of Southern Deanery Council of Catholic Women, celebrate their 25th Anniversary in the Priesthood; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that we thank them for their leadership, dedication and support of the women in their Deaneries, and we thank God for the gift of these two priests - for all they have done in the parishes they served and for all the lives they touched. They have made a difference.

 

 

1994 RESOLUTIONS

 

THEME

WHEREAS, the Theme of this convention is 'Commitment On Wings of Change;" therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) continue with their commitment to serve God as we are called to do, but we must also be open to changing our thoughts and attitudes about ourselves and those around us.

 

1991 AND 1992 RESOLUTIONS RESTATED

WHEREAS, As we vote on the resolutions today let us remember resolutions passed at the 1991 and 1992 ODCCW conventions; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that affiliations become active in the political process, by educating their members about life issues, such as abortion, prenatal care, poverty, substance abuse, health care, housing, homelessness, environment, AIDS, and motivating them to help get the disenfranchised back into the system; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that we, the members of ODCCW must be willing to care enough to study and support a program of health care proposed by the Catholic Health Association; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that we, as Catholic women realize that each person is God's unique creation; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED That the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women reaffirms past resolutions of the Council which seek protection for the span of human life from conception to natural death; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED:  We therefore resolve, 1) to renew our resolution to seek protection of the law for the span of human life without exception. We will especially cooperate with the National Committee for Human Life Amendment, Inc.;  2)  to recommend that the ODCCW implement the annual Respect Life Program and Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities of the Pro-Life Program Committee of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops;  3) to continue loving service to mothers of unborn children; 4) to request that the ODCCW support Respite and hospices and other services that give compassionate aid and care to those in need and support to their families; 5)  to support the establishment of policies relating to aging that will allow the aged to live meaningfully as a part of families and communities and that will also require adequate and dignified institutional care and services, such as that provided by Florida Manor in Orlando;  6) to encourage facilities and opportunities for all handicapped persons which will allow them to function to their maximum potential;   7)  to recognize that adequate health care is essential to support life and to assist in encouraging feasible programs for health care delivery to all; and be it further

RESOLVED that the ODCCW will designate April 26th as a Day of Prayer to our Lady of Good Counsel, to focus on the dignity and respect for human life.

 

INTERENATIONAL YEAR OF THE FAMILY

WHEREAS, The United States General Assembly, in its resolution 44/82 of December 8,1989, proclaimed 1994 as the International Year of the Family with the theme, "Family:  Resources and Responsibilities in a Changing World," and

WHEREAS the ODCCW recognizes that, despite many changes in society, families still provide a vital nurturing framework for the support and well-being of their members, play an important role in formal and informal education, and are active agents for transmitting human values and culture identity as well as preserving intergenerational links; and

WHEREAS, The ODCCW is particularly aware of being open to the challenges of today, and the "signs of the times" spoken of repeatedly at Vatican II; and

WHEREAS, The ODCCW is committed to families of all ages and is concerned about the spiritual, emotional, physical and financial well-being of families, particularly in these stressful times; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the ODCCW endorses the International Year of the Family as an opportunity to focus on the numerous family issues, in particular, on vulnerable families in 1994; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the ODCCW will promote and support the Catholic Campaign for Children and Families, a collaborative effort of the United States Catholic Conference and many generated by the U. S. Catholic Bishops' statement "Putting Children and Families First;" and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED That the ODCCW, in an effort to support women and families, will continue efforts aimed at the development and implementation of their programs.

 

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

WHEREAS, the ODCCW believes that each individual is a valuable human being who is entitled to a healthy physical, social and psychological development; and

WHEREAS, domestic violence is a sin against the human person and a major social problem which cuts across all racial, religious, ethnic and socioeconomic boundaries and, in most cases, is an abuse of women and children; and

WHEREAS, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, in an attempt to educate, has issued "When I Call For Help," a pastoral response to domestic violence against women; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the ODCCW will promote the bishops' response, "When I Call For Help, " in Council affiliates, churches and communities; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the ODCCW, in collaboration with other diocesan offices and ministries, will continue to educate both men and women on the issue of domestic violence: and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the ODCCW will address this issue by offering support in work and action to women and families who have suffered abuse and will encourage various Ministerial leaders to address this in homilies and at other appropriate times; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the ODCCW will advocate, for legislation, which addresses the issue of domestic violence through such measures as assistance to battered women and children, making funding of shelters and educational programs a federal priority.

 

 

1995  RESOLUTIONS

 

THEME

WHEREAS, the Theme of this convention is "A Time for Growth in the Garden of the Lord," and

WHEREAS, 2 Timothy 2:15 tells us, Work hard so God can say to you "well done."  Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed when God examines your work; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) will continue our work with spiritual programs, self-development programs, works of charity and programs promoting responsibility for the world given to us to maintain while we are on earth; and may our work prepare us for the time we enter the Garden of the Lord.

 

CLERGY

WHEREAS, Father Redmond has served faithfully as the moderator for the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women for ten years; and

WHEREAS, the Deanery and Affiliation Moderators have served the Council with their advice, support and encouragement; and

WHEREAS, the Holy Father, our Bishops, and priests throughout the world serve the Church and its people by dedicating their lives to the service; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the Council of Catholic Women will continue to support our clergy with our prayers, words of encouragement and thanks, and our love and support for the work they do; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that we will especially pray for our hurting priests and ask for God's intervention with His healing and comfort for all.

 

NCCW 75TH ANNIVERSARY

WHEREAS, the National Council of Catholic Women celebrates, this year, their 75th Anniversary; and

WHEREAS, the Holy Father, the President of the United States, Cardinals, Bishops, Legislators and other dignitaries send thanks and congratulations to the Catholic Women of the United States; and

WHEREAS, Bishop Symons, Bishop of Palm Beach, sums it up in his tribute for this occasion when he says, “As Jesus was accompanied by holy women, as bishops and pastors through the centuries have experienced the gifts and the collaboration of women, so also holy and gifted Catholic women walk with us in our place
and time. They inspire us! They challenge us!..." therefore, be it,

RESOLVED that, as we continue to reach out with our service to God and our sisters and brothers-in-Christ, that we will never forget to challenge, to question, and inspire society to be living examples of the Beatitudes; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that each Affiliation Council will strive to meet the challenge of $75 in 95 in honor of this anniversary, for the Annual Giving Campaign.

 

SUPPORTING OUR WOMEN

WHEREAS, Winkie LeFils presently serves as Vice-President General of the World Union of Catholic Women's Organizations; and

WHEREAS, Kathy Bonner presently serves as Third Vice-President of the National Council of Catholic Women; and

WHEREAS, Winkie's name has been submitted for President General of the World Union of Catholic Women's Organizations; and

WHEREAS, Kathy's name has been submitted for Second Vice-President of NCCW; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that we will support these dedicated and gifted women with our prayers and help and encouragement; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that, as the World Union of Catholic Women's Organizations hold their 1996 Assembly in February in Australia, we will support this organization with our prayers and financial support. And that we will ask for Divine guidance as they discuss family, health, and other national problems on a worldwide level and seek global solutions.

 

ODCCW PROGRAMS

WHEREAS, the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women strives to help its members grow spiritually, personally and in service to others; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated group of ODCCW trained leaders give of their time and talent to present Personal Development Seminars to each Deanery; and

WHEREAS, the Diocesan RESPITE Chairman has provided training sessions for those who are willing to give of their time and love to care for someone homebound for a few hours so that the caregiver can have a respite; and

WHEREAS, our Woman-to-Woman Program in our Sister Diocese in the Dominican Republic continues to flourish; and

WHEREAS, we have chosen as our project to purchase a roof and help families be self-supporting; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that we will promote these and other Diocesan Council programs to better meet the needs of our members and friends.

 

 

1996 ODCCW RESOLUTIONS

 

EDUCATION

WHEREAS, governmental agencies have been giving greater priority to education during the past decade; and

WHEREAS, the danger that these agencies, faced with mounting debts, will be tempted to freeze or cut educational spending; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW members remind these agencies of the importance of a better educated population; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW members consider offering their services as educators. That women themselves make known the fact that where there is illiteracy, there is "more hunger, disease and infant mortality, as well as humiliation, exploitation and all kinds of suffering."  Pope John Paul II

 

VALUE OF HUMAN LIFE

WHEREAS, recognizing the fundamental sacred value of all human life from conception to natural death, and the dignity of all persons; and

WHEREAS, in order to counteract 'the culture of death' that prevails in this country; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that our members promote and support the provision of extended care for terminally ill persons and the frail aged; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that members actively work against the decriminalization of euthanasia and medically assisted suicide where there are attempts to introduce such legislation; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW confirm the right to life of all persons from conception to natural death and provide support for those most at risk from decriminalization of euthanasia such as the frail elderly and the terminally ill.

 

ECONOMIC JUSTICE

WHEREAS, the U.S. Bishops' Pastoral letter, "Economic Justice for all: Catholic Social Teaching and the U.S. Economy," was written in 1986; and

WHEREAS, this anniversary provides an opportunity to revisit the foundations of the pastoral and to recommit us to reflection, dialogue, and economic justice; and

WHEREAS, ODCCW members need to continue to add their voice to the public debate about the directions in which the economy should be directed, especially as it impacts women and children; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that we engage ourselves in the dialogue and reflection on this 10th anniversary of "Economic Justice For all;" and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW members continue to work to improve the human dignity and economic status of women and children.

 

VOTING

WHEREAS, The right to vote is to be treasured as it was gained through sacrifice and perseverance; and

WHEREAS, We are called as citizens of a democracy to vote and participate in the decisions of our government; therefore, be it

RESOLVED That ODCCW affiliates actively sponsor nonpartisan voter registration for the 1996 election; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED That ODCCW members be urged to bring our Catholic social principles to community issue forums; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW join NCCW in designating the year 2000 A.D. as "The Year of the Catholic Woman" thereby encouraging Catholic women to seek elected office in order to articulate Gospel values in the public arena.

 

DISCRIMINATION

WHEREAS, race discrimination and acts of violence against Afro Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Haitians and other ethnic groups are rising in the United States, and have risen in the State of Florida; and

WHEREAS, discrimination and acts of violence continue to happen against different religions in our country; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the Council of Catholic Women will work toward solutions and encourage forums in their community to foster a sharing of cultures and religions. That we will work to increase understanding and acceptance of each other through dialogue on a parish level; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the Council of Catholic Women will work with the Diocesan Office of Black and Haitian Ministry; that we seek guidance and direction from this Office and assist in their outreach.

 

VIOLENCE IN CHILDREN

WHEREAS, violent crimes are rising among young children, to the point where eight year and twelve year olds have recently been arrested for beating to near death a four week old baby; and

WHEREAS, guns are being taken from elementary school children and gangs are directing new members to kill someone as an initiation to the gang; and

WHEREAS, TV, video games, and computer games target our youth with violence as the norm; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Council of Catholic Women will seek neighborhood programs to have mothers who do not work outside of the home be available for latch key children; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the Council will continue to sponsor and promote the RAINBOW Program for All God's Children in our CCD's and Catholic Schools. This program helps children who have lost a parent through death or divorce; and, therefore, be it further,

RESOLVED that we will challenge sponsors of violent TV programs, TV writers, Video companies and Computer Software companies to take the sex and violence out of programs children watch and use. That we will take whatever steps necessary to see that our youth, our future, grow up in a safe and caring environment with Christian values.

 

GIFTEDNESS

WHEREAS, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and the 15th Anniversary of the U.S. Bishop's Pastoral Letter on the laity titled "Called & Gifted;" therefore, be it

RESOLVED that we will empower our Council members to use their giftedness to serve their parishes and communities. That we will recognize that giftedness as God's handiwork and be supportive and encouraging to our members

 

 

 

1998 Resolutions

 

THEME

WHEREAS, the theme of the 1998 Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) Convention is "The Seeds Have Blossomed, Gather Them In With Love"; and

WHEREAS, ODCCW wishes to recognize the efforts of the affiliates to increase membership, support programs and projects, and promote the goals of ODCCW; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that special tribute be paid to those faithful members who, for many years, have been the backbone of Council work; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the participants in this convention relay ODCCW's appreciation and gratitude to those members who could not attend.

 

CHILD ABUSE

WHEREAS, all children are created in the image and likeness of God and inherently deserve care, respect, and protection from emotional, physical, sexual, and verbal abuse; and

WHEREAS, in this country, basic family and moral values seem to be eroding to the extent that child abuse and domestic violence are at unprecedented levels; and

WHEREAS, the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) launched the Doll Campaign to the membership of the National Council of Catholic Women NCCW) at its 1997 convention to promote awareness of the thousands of abused children throughout the country; and

WHEREAS, the cycle of child abuse needs to be addressed before full recovery is possible; and

WHEREAS the members of ODCCW are keenly aware of the effectiveness of active participation in the legislative process; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW will continue to seek and promote programs to benefit abused children; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW shall work through its commission system to support awareness campaigns, shelters, education, and counseling; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW shall advocate for legislation addressing safety, morality, and family life.

 

ANTI-PERSONNEL LANDMINES

WHEREAS, the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) membership has actively supported legislative initiatives to ban anti-personnel landmines; and

WHEREAS, the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) recognizes the personal pain and suffering these indiscriminate deadly weapons inflict on innocent people and the extent to which they prevent countries and regions from rebuilding a normal social and economic life; and

WHEREAS, the United States Catholic Conference (USCC) has announced the "Catholic Campaign to Ban Landmines;" therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW opposes the manufacturing, stockpiling, sale, and deployment of United States and foreign-made anti-personnel landmines; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW encourage its members to support and to become actively engaged in the 1997 "Catholic Campaign to Ban Landmines."

 

REFUGEE WOMEN EMERGENCY FUND

WHEREAS, the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) has recognized the special needs and challenges of refugee and internally displaced women; and

WHEREAS, ODCCW particularly recognizes the pain, suffering, and discrimination in the refugee camps; and

WHEREAS, the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW), in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services, has established the Refugee Women Emergency Fund as the initial program in Works of Reconciliation; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW encourage its affiliates to actively support the Refugee Women Emergency Fund through financial assistance, education awareness, and prayer for the safety and return of refugee women and their families to their homelands.

 

EMPOWERING CATHOLIC WOMEN

WHEREAS, the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) Organization Commission upholds the recommendations of NCCW to support and empower all Catholic women into the next millennium; and

WHEREAS, each of us must grow in commitment, love, and solidarity, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW provide protocol, parliamentary procedure, and membership information to its affiliates through workshops, Leadership Symposiums, and communications; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW encourage its affiliates to promote and support educational opportunities among their members.

 

 

1999 PROPOSED RESOLUTIONS

 

THEME

WHEREAS, the theme of the 1999 convention of the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) is "A Rebirth ... Hope and Healing;" and

WHEREAS, we come together each year to celebrate God's goodness and grace; and

WHEREAS, through speakers, workshops, and sharing with one another, ODCCW plants the seeds for new growth and renewal of faith among its affiliates; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW continue to give its affiliates the tools by which they can flourish and grow, and, in turn, share their faith with others.

 

RESPECT FOR LIFE

WHEREAS, the ODCCW has always respected life at all stages, from birth to natural death; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the ODCCW continue to promote programs that protect the right to life of the unborn, the elderly, the disabled, and the poor; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the ODCCW continue to lobby legislators to enact laws that benefit every segment of society.

 

CHILD ABUSE

WHEREAS, the ODCCW has developed a program to defend and protect the children; and

WHEREAS, the Child Abuse Committee has organized trips to Tallahassee to promote its "Doll Project" for the past two legislative sessions; and

WHEREAS, at its 1998 convention, ODCCW resolved to seek and promote programs to benefit abused children and to lobby for legislation addressing safety, morality, and family life; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW reaffirm last year's resolution, and continue to promote programs that will support that resolution; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW members continue to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves.

 

THE ELDERLY

WHEREAS, the elderly are often neglected and abused; and

WHEREAS, the elderly must be respected as persons, cared for and helped in ways which will promote their rights and ensure their greatest possible physical and spiritual well-being; and

WHEREAS, the elderly must be protected from situations or pressures which could drive them to suicide, and in particular they must be helped to resist the temptation of assisted suicide and euthanasia; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW will lobby for and support federal, state, and local policies that will protect the elderly; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW will promote programs designed to raise awareness of the plight of the elderly and work for their protection.

 

PRISON MINISTRY

WHEREAS, the Most Reverend Norbert M. Dorsey, Bishop of Orlando, has recognized the need to bring the Word of God and the teaching of Jesus Christ to people in prison; and

WHEREAS, the families of those incarcerated also suffer and need our support; therefore, b it

RESOLVED that the ODCCW develop a program to determine the needs of the parish families with relatives in prison; and, therefore, be it further

MARY’S GARDEN

WHEREAS, in the past, the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) has had no presence at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, there is no place outdoors for pilgrims to rest, reflect and pray when they have completed their pilgrimage and tour of the Shrine; and

WHEREAS, NCCW would like to be recognized as an organization which has contributed to the Basilica - the largest Catholic Church in the Western hemisphere and the destination of a half million pilgrims annually; and

WHEREAS, NCCW proposes to build a garden behind the apse of the Basilica to offer a site of hospitality for the visitors who journey to the Shrine each year; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW support NCCW in realizing its dream to build "Mary's Garden" to honor the Blessed Mother and to recognize the lives of faith-filled women, by encouraging individual women to donate to the project.

 

 

2000 PROPOSED RESOLUTIONS

 

THEME

WHEREAS, the theme of the 2000 convention of the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) is One Heart.. .One Mind; and

WHEREAS, the members of the ODCCW come together each year to celebrate unity with God and the Church; and

WHEREAS, through speakers, workshops, and sharing with one another, they reaffirm their unity through commissions, charitable contributions, and advocacy; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW continue to support Catholic Social Teaching by speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves.

 

PARTICIPATION

WHEREAS, Pope John Paul II has designated March 25, Feast of the Annunciation, and May 14, Mother's Day, as Jubilee days in the year 2000, to commemorate and celebrate the vocation and work of women in the Church; and

WHEREAS, these days are set aside to reflect on the contributions women have made and continue to make in the life of the Church and in the world; and

WHEREAS, the Church will be encouraged to reflect on the challenges women face living the Gospel in the new millennium; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the ODCCW will support and assist women in preparing to celebrate these designated Jubilee days; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW will encourage participation in these celebrations by all women in the Church and in the world.

 

COMMERCIAL SEXUAL EXPLOIT A TION OF CHILDREN

WHEREAS, "sex tourism" is the exploitation by adults of millions of children in foreign countries as well as in the United States, through prostitution, pornography, and trafficking of children for sexual purposes: and

WHEREAS, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin American countries are known as the destination for Americans seeking underage sex, and multiple U.S. companies offer "sex tours;" and

WHEREAS, the Internet serves as a tool for the distribution of materials featuring on-line child pornography; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW pledges to work with such organizations as The Campaign to End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes (ECPAAT-USA) to stop the sexual exploitation of children through education and the advocacy for stronger international laws eradicating commercial sexual exploitation of children.

 

OSTEOPOROSIS

WHEREAS, the majority of private health care policies do not cover testing related to osteoporosis; and

WHEREAS, the ODCCW supports medical research for the prevention, early detection, and cure of osteoporosis, which strikes one in two women in their lifetime, causing suffering and limited ability to live quality lives; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW continue to support a national education program and advocate for the passage of a law that would identify bone density testing as a preventive measure covered by private insurance.

 

MENTAL HEALTH

WHEREAS, ODCCW has continually affirmed the dignity of human life and calls for its protection and care from conception to natural death; and

WHEREAS, ODCCW also has affirmed that the family is the "vital cell of society", and that increasing pressures exerted on the family structure threaten to cause family separation and crisis, and that ODCCW is dedicated to preserving family life based on Christian principles and ethics; and

WHEREAS, ODCCW recognizes that persons who suffer with the most severe forms of chronic mental illness, and in fact have a diagnosable form of severe brain disease (e.g., schizophrenia, bipolar or manic-depressive disorder, clinical depression, and others) are often untreated for their biological illness, and therefore suffer devastating consequences of non-treatment; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW will provide educational materials to its members and their families about current brain disease research, treatments, and the consequences of non-treatment, and legal issues, as they affect the lives of persons with severe biological brain diseases and the lives of their families; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW advocate/lobby for improved legislation which will allow for assisted treatment of the chronically mentally ill who refuse treatment because they do not recognize that they are ill and are unable to make informed medical decisions; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW will advocate/lobby for adequate, affordable, and non-discriminatory national medical insurance coverage for persons suffering the most severe forms of biological brain disease to equal coverage provided for other biological diseases.

 

FUNDS FOR SHELTERS FOR ABUSED WOMEN

WHEREAS, the problem of abused women is increasing at alarming speed; and

WHEREAS, abused women must be respected as persons and cared for and helped in ways which will promote their rights and ensure their greatest possible physical and spiritual well-being; and

WHEREAS, abused women must be protected from situations or pressure, which could drive them to suicide; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW will lobby for and support federal, state, and local policies which will protect abused women and provide funding for domestic violence shelters.

 

FLORIDA KIDCARE PROGRAM

WHEREAS, there is a lack of affordable health insurance available to cover low-income uninsured children in Florida; and

WHEREAS, Governor Bush has proposed additional funding in this year's Health and Human Services Budget to serve all 260,000 children eligible for the KidCare Program, including dental benefits; and

WHEREAS, Florida is the only state to impose matching funds from counties, thus putting an extra burden on small counties, and Federal Child Health Insurance legislation does not mandate a community match that some other federal programs require; and

WHEREAS, funding to replace local match is available from the Lawton Chiles Endowment Trust Fund and tobacco money dedicated to child health; and

WHEREAS, the KidCare Program is a priority of the Bishops of Florida; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW support the Florida Bishops and the Florida Catholic Conference in making the Florida KidCare Program a top priority in our advocacy efforts; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW will lobby the Florida Legislature to include the following amendments to the Florida KidCare Act: (1) Replacing the local match for Healthy Kids; (2) Removing the age-based standards for eligibility for children; (3) Removing restrictions in KidCare of Medipass Choice; (4) Providing dental coverage; and (5) Providing health insurance for immigrant children.

 

MARY'S GARDEN

WHEREAS, the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., provides for the spiritual needs of pilgrims and visitors who journey to the capital city; and

WHEREAS, ODCCW supports the spirituality of Catholic women through programs, resources and meetings; and

WHEREAS, the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) has successfully established a project with the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception to build a garden of prayer known as Mary's Garden on a site at the Shrine; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the ODCCW join the other affiliates, members, and friends of NCCW to give thanks for the successful effort to build Mary's Garden, which creates a lasting presence of the National Council of Catholic Women.

BISHOP GRADY VILLAS:

WHEREAS, the Bishop Grady's Villas will shelter our mentally challenged adults; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the ODCCW will support Bishop Grady' s vision by helping finance this unique Christian residential home for God's children with special needs.

 

PROJECT RACHEL:

WHEREAS, the Rachel Program that helps women in the healing process from the scares of abortion; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the ODCCW will support this hotline so victims of abortions will know that they are loved and forgiven.

 

HELP-A-CHILD

WHEREAS, Help-a-Child Latin America through Catholic Relief Services and the National Council of Catholic Women seeks to alleviate the suffering of children and their families; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the ODCCW accepts the challenge of the Florida Council of Catholic Women; and, therefore, be it futher

RESOLVED that ODCCW will support the long-term needs of children in Latin America.

HONORING SAINTS KATHARINE DREXEL AND JOSEPHINE BAKHITA

WHEREAS, on October 1, 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized Blessed Katharine Drexel, founder of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1891, who was taught from an early age to use her wealth for the benefit of others, and also on October 1, 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized Blessed Josephine
Bakhita, known as Sister Moretta, who served as a Canossian Sister for over 50 years; and

WHEREAS, Saint Katharine Drexel was urged by Pope Leo XIII to become a missionary to the Dakota and Sioux Indians and, by 1942, had in place a system of Black Catholic schools and Indian missions; and

WHEREAS, Saint Josephine Bakhita endured slavery and abuse during her early years,and became an adult convert to Christianity, serving the poor and the suffering; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) will encourage its members and, indeed, all women to emulate the qualities of Saint Katharine Drexel's life of prayer, meditation, patience, and humility; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that NCCW identify Saint Josephine Bakhita as an evangelical model for Catholic Women and follow her example by serving with simplicity, humility and charity; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the women of NCCW promote the study of the lives of Saints Katharine Drexel and Josephine Bakhita, thereby continuing their works of witnessing to faith, goodness and Christian hope.

 

SUPPORT OF MINISTRIES

WHEREAS, the objective of the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) Church Commission is to create a community of God's people that is educated, dynamic and spiritually motivated; and

WHEREAS, life in the Church community is not limited to purely religious activities; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the women of ODCCW pursue the path of spirituality, bible study, and service through the many parish and community ministries in need of our wholehearted support and participation.

 

FAMILY MORAL ENVIRONMENT

WHEREAS, the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) continues to provide moral support and education to Catholic women in order to promote homes, schools, libraries, playgrounds, commercial spaces, free from the insensitivity to immorality that can destroy the sanctity and solidity of marriage and family; and

WHEREAS, to seek better protection from other environments used by our children and families to be free of media portraying violence, explicit sex, pornography, and indecency; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the ODCCW continues to work diligently with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Morality in Media, and the National Coalition Against Pornography to educate and to raise awareness of evils from irresponsible media.

 

INTERNET FILTERING

WHEREAS, the 106th Session of Congress has passed the CHILDREN'S INTERNET PROTECTION BILL (CIPA) H.R. 4577 in the year 2000, requiring public schools receiving E-rate discounts and various grants from the government to install adequate filtering software to protect public school children from accessing objectionable sites, including obscene adult and child pornography, hate sites, dangerous chat rooms, Internet gambling, illegal firearm sales, etc.; and

WHEREAS, individual states have heard the outcry from concerned parents and are in the process of passing legislation to mandate the installation of protective filtering software in public schools and libraries; and

WHEREAS, it is estimated that 85 out of 3900 new Internet web sites created daily are porn sites, and knowing that Internet providers and the porn industry refuse to regulate or restrict this objectionable, lucrative commerce in cyberspace; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) will encourage and support state and federal legislation calling for the installation of filtering software on public access, taxpayer funded computers in all schools and libraries; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the ODCCW will support anti-pornography advocacies, church organizations and community groups in opposing efforts to overturn the protective legislation of CIPA through legal challenges; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the ODCCW continue to support programs that encourage parents and guardians of minors to install personalized Internet filtering software on home computers to protect children from objectionable web sites.

 

WORLD REFUGEE DAY

WHEREAS, the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) recognizes the plight of an increasing number of refugee women due to natural disasters and civil conflict and the need to offer our support for them financially and in the development of asylums; and

WHEREAS, approximately 50 million refugees have been helped to start a new life since 1950, and yet there are still more refugees in the world now than at any time in the past; and

WHEREAS, the ODCCW follows the NCCW programs such as Works of Reconciliation-Refugee Women Emergency Fund, and Works of Peace-Help-A-Child Global Fund, through a solid partnership with Catholic Relief Services; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW promote and observe United Nations World Refugee Day designated for June 20th each year; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED, that ODCCW reaffirm our commitment to established NCCW and Catholic Relief Services programs that provide aid and recognition of refugee women.

 

MEMBERSHIP

WHEREAS, one of the goals of the Organization Commission is to develop membership among the young, the minority, the married, the single, and the mature; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the Organization Commission will continue to reach out to the women in our community with openess, affirmation, and support for them and for the varying stages in their lives.

 

CHILDREN'S HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT

WHEREAS, children are uniquely vulnerable to varied environmental exposures which can cause permanent, irreversible mental and physical damage; and

WHEREAS, thousands of new chemicals are in commercial use whose toxicity has never been tested and whose potential dangers to children are unknown; and

WHEREAS, most environmental health regulations are based on adult data and do not take into consideration the sensitivity of children; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW), the National Religious Partnership for the Environment, which consists of the Florida Council of Catholic Women (FCCW) and Women of Reform Judaism in Florida, supports the inclusion of child protection in all environmental policy; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED to build support throughout Florida for policies and programs that will ensure the protection of our children and their environment; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED to support the creation of a Children's Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council that will bring together people of all professions to be a resource to communities, policy makers, and public health officers throughout the State.

WHEREAS, the United States of America has experienced acts of aggression, violation of the integrity of its borders, loss of precious human life and untold damage to property and community life; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the members, together with the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW), the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW), pledge solidarity with those who still mourn, heartfelt compassion for those who still mourn, heartfelt compassion for those recovering from injuries, deep appreciation to all those dedicated people who are still responding to the call, and unity with one another; and, therefore be it further

RESOLVED that all members bring to prayer the President of the United States of America, all men and women of our government, the members of our armed forces; and, therefore, be it further

WHEREAS, the mission of the ODCCW continues to be the education, support, and empowerment of Catholic women in spirituality, leadership, and service; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the women of ODCCW continue to pursue this mission by witnessing to the Gospels through its commissions and other services with dedication; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED, that we empower one another to be the best that we can be and encourage and support our members in their accomplishments.

 

EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT

WHEREAS, the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women represents Catholic women of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, edu­cational and economic statuses, and political persuasions; and

WHEREAS, we continue to work for equality and justice for women; and

WHEREAS, the proposed Equal Rights Amendment is too vague and undefined; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women shall study and promote action regarding legislation addressed specifically to women s needs and to support programs which will help recognize the abilities and talents of women; and, therefore, be it futher

RESOLVED that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women reaffirm its opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment in its current form.

 

CLONING/STEM CELL RESEARCH

WHEREAS, the Catholic Church proclaims that all human life is sacred; and

WHEREAS, the sanctity of human life and the inherent dignity of the human person is the foundation of all of the principles of our social teaching; and

WHEREAS, human cloning, whether reproductive or therapeutic, is a crass manipulation of the intrinsic dignity of human life; and

WHEREAS, there are alternatives to human cloning and embryonic stem cell research. Stem cells taken from consenting adults, and even from umbilical cords and the placenta, have the potential to provide new tissues for therapeutic use, but without the destruction of human life; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women distribute the brochure, “Call to Ban Human Cloning,” written by Rev. Dr. Alfred Cioffi, BS, STD, and published by the Florida Council of Catholic Women in its affiliations and parishes; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED, that we contact all state and federal legislators to voice our support for a ban on human cloning and embryonic stem cell research.

 

PEACE

WHEREAS, our Catholic faith and the teachings of Christ give us the source of true meaning in our lives; and

WHEREAS, the women of ODCCW are women of faith, hope, love, prayer, and peace; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that all members pray for the President of the United States of America, members of our government, world leaders, and our armed forces; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED, that all members of this council do our part to let goodness win over evil, truth over falsehood, and that love be victorious over hatred.

SUPPORT FOR THE CHARTER FOR THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

WHEREAS, the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) acknowledges the impact of clerical sexual abuse within the Catholic Church; and

WHEREAS, the abusers may reconcile with God and those they abused; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the members of ODCCW offer our prayers and support for the priests who nourish and guide us and faithfully serve the needs of our parishes; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW members support victims and abusers with prayer and ministry; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW members support the efforts of the bishops in implementing the "Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People" that the U.S. Bishops approved June 2002.

 

SUPPORT OF DIVERSE FAMILIES

WHEREAS, the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) recognizes that today children are being raised in various family environments, such as single parents, blended families, grandparents, stepparents, and foster parents as well as the traditional two-parent family; and

WHEREAS, ODCCW is committed to families of all ages and environments, while recognizing the family as the primary environment for the moral guidance and religious upbringing of the children; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the members of ODCCW encourage and support programs in parishes designed to address different family situations; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the members of ODCCW also support these various family environments by offering prayers, especially the Rosary.

 

POPE'S CALL TO PRAY THE ROSARY

WHEREAS, the people of the world currently experience a great deal of turmoil and uncertainty, see events escalate quickly to threats of war, and recognize that peace is constantly being threatened; and

WHEREAS, Pope John Paul II, in his letter "Rosarium Virginis Mariae", has asked all Catholics to pray the Rosary for world peace; and

WHEREAS, women have received special and unique gifts from God to harbor and nurture life, to seek respect and human dignity for all people, and to strive for peace; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) encourage women across the country to pray the Rosary, using the Mysteries of Light every Thursday, with the special intention for world peace; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the membership of ODCCW work for peace in all aspects of their lives, speaking out on nurturing life rather than taking life.

 

OFFER SUPPORT TO THOSE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED ABORTION DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY

WHEREAS, more than forty million abortions have occurred since 1973 when abortion on demand was legalized; and

WHEREAS, women and their families have suffered the emotional trauma and sorrow of an abortion; and

WHEREAS, there are individuals unknown to us who are silently suffering who need our understanding and support; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW educate the members in ways to reach out and offer assistance and support, including spiritual, financial, and emotional, to these individuals and to programs such as Project Rachel, Project Jericho, and Gabriel Project.

 

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES 60™ ANNIVERSARY

WHEREAS, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the official overseas relief and development agency of the United State Catholic Conference of Bishops, celebrates sixty years of service to those in need around the world and education to U.S. Catholics to raise awareness, engagement, and build Global Solidarity; and

WHEREAS, the National Council of Catholic Women(NCCW), through its affiliates, has faithfully and generously supported CRS since 1946 through the Madonna Plan, Water for Life, Help-A-Child programs, and Refugee Women Emergency Fund; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW offer congratulations to CRS and prayers of thanksgiving to CRS on the celebration of its 60th year of service to the Church and the most needy in the world.

 

WATER FOR LIFE 25TH ANNIVERSARY

WHEREAS, the National Council of Catholic Women (NCC W) officially recognized the ongoing efforts to bring water to communities of need in 1978 with the establishment of the Water For Life Fund designated specifically to support the work of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in digging wells, building water storage tanks, and creating means to bring water to the most underdeveloped regions; and

WHEREAS, over these twenty-five years, with the generous support of hundreds of donors, sources of water have been brought to communities of people worldwide, thereby changing the lives of women and children and providing hope to all the people; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW acknowledge to the membership the 25th Anniversary of the Water for Life Fund; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW support future efforts by the Vatican and the international community to recognize formally the "right" of each human life to accessible, clean, and potable water.

WHEREAS, the National Council of Catholic Women is hosting and planning the 2006 World Assembly in Arlington VA. for the World Union of Catholic Women Organizations (WUCWO); therefore, be it

RESOLVED that, as members of the National Council of Catholic Women, we will support the request for financial assistance in funding a woman and or one of the translators from a third world country to attend and participate in the 2006 World Assembly.

 

YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST

WHEREAS, the Supreme Pontiff John Paul II decreed in his Apostolic Letter, MANE NOBISCUM DOM1NE, of October 7,2004, that a special "Year" be celebrated throughout the Church to be called the "YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST," and

WHEREAS, this year of the Eucharist is to encourage in the faithful a deeper knowledge, and more intense love for this Mystery of Faith, for the faithful to obtain an even greater abundance of spiritual fruit, the Holy Father endowed the gift of a Plenary Indulgence during this year of the Eucharist to particular acts of worship, and veneration of the Most Blessed Sacrament; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that during this year let us reflect on this central mystery of our faith and partake more fully of the Eucharist and live out this gift in a life of service with hope and love.

 

SUPPORTING THE MILITARY

WHEREAS, many brave men and women have served and are serving in Iraq and some have died in this fight to obtain peace for this troubled country; and

WHEREAS, peace does not come without sacrifice; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women continues to provide for these men and women with prayers, loving care packages, and moral support for those left at home.

 

VICTIMS OF DISASTERS

WHEREAS, natural disasters have devastated areas of the world, our country and our state; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the women of the ODCCW will continue to reach out to those who have suffered the effects of these disasters with prayer, financial assistance, and emotional support.

 

LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY

WHEREAS, legislation on the State and National levels affects the moral, economic, and social life of all people; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women supports the Florida Catholic Conference in recognizing the dignity of all human life from birth to natural death; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that we recognize that this is accomplished through prayer; active participation in Justice and Peace Programs; support of Pro Life Legislation; effective letter writing campaigns; and the election of professional, ethical, and morally responsible candidates for public office.

 

 

2006 PROPOSED RESOLUTIONS

 

Theme

WHEREAS, the theme of the 2006 convention of the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) is "ODCCW Women of Faith and Hope," and

WHEREAS, we gather this year to continue to nurture our gifts of faith and hope through love, unity, service and prayer; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the ODCCW be Christ's instruments of faith and hope.

 

Protect the Sanctity of Marriage

WHEREAS, marriage, as instituted by God, is a faithful, exclusive, lifelong union of a man and a woman joined in an intimate community of life and love" (Between Man and Woman: Questions and Answers About Marriage and Same-Sex Unions, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops [USCCB], 2003); and

WHEREAS, "Marriage is both a natural institution and a sacred union because it is rooted in the divine plan for creation," and in order to uphold God's intent for marriage, in which sexual relations have their proper and exclusive place (Between Man and Woman: Questions and Answers About Marriage and Same-Sex Unions); and

WHEREAS, this defense of the sanctity of marriage offers no form of discrimination to nor a denial of the fundamental human rights for homosexual persons but proclaims as immoral sexual relations outside of the marriage of a man and a woman; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) encourage married couples to uphold the dignity of marriage and, by the witness of their faithful, life-giving love, be the best advocates for marriage, and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED, that ODCCW encourage member participation in state and community by voice and vote to defend marriage as defined by the USCCB in their “Statement Between Man and Woman: Questions and Answers About Marriage and Same-Sex Unions.”

 

Support for "Water for Life: A Basic Human Right"

WHEREAS, the United Nations has declared 2005 as the beginning of the "Water for Life Decade" to meet the internationally agreed targets for water and sanitation by 2015, and drafted a "Treaty on the Human Right to Water,” and

WHEREAS, the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) has a longstanding partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) through the "Water for Life" project to promote health, nutrition, environmental sanitation education, and potable water development; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW continue to increase awareness of and promote participation in the National Council of Catholic Women/Catholic Relief Services "Water for Life" projects; and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that ODCCW support efforts calling for the international recognition of water as a basic human need and right.

 

In Recognition of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI

WHEREAS, Pope John Paul II was Vicar of Christ and pastor to over 1.1 billion Catholics world-wide, traveling to 130 countries and territories as evangelist and pilgrim of peace; and

WHEREAS, Pope John Paul II, after 26 years in the seat of Peter, was called home to the Lord, leaving a rich theological legacy; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Dean of the College of Cardinals, and President of the Commission for the Preparation of the 1992 Catechism of the Catholic Church, was elected the 265th Pope on April 19, 2005, and is now known as Pope Benedict XVI; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the members of the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) pray to God, our Heavenly Father, for the repose of the soul of Pope John Paul II as we remember his exemplary life in service to others, and, therefore, be it further

RESOLVED that the members of Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) pray daily for Pope Benedict XVI, as he shepherds the people of God, guided by the Holy Spirit.

 

Pope Benedict XVI Encyclical "Deus Caritas Est"

WHEREAS, in his first Encyclical address, "Deus Caritas Est" ("God is Love"), Pope Benedict XVI urged Catholics to express love through charitable works; and

WHEREAS, Pope Benedict XVI recognized the history of charity and volunteerism within the Roman Catholic Church and expressed the need for all Catholics to become more active within their communities; and

WHEREAS, the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) is called through selfless giving of one's gifts to make a difference; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) continue to work with Bishop Thomas Wenski, Bishop of Orlando, with faith and hope, "so that the love of God can spread throughout the world" (Deus Caritas Est).

 

 

2007 Proposed Resolutions

 

THEME

WHEREAS, the theme of the 2007 convention of the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) is "ODCCW Women....Discovering our Gifts..Sharing Our Gifts," and

WHEREAS, members come together each to celebrate God's goodness, grace and unite with God and the Church; and

WHEREAS, through speakers and sharing, we reaffirm our oneness through commissions, contributions, and renewal of faith in our organization; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW continues to support its affiliates and Catholic Social teachings by sharing their faith with others.

 

MEMBERSHIP

WHEREAS, one of the goals of the women of the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) is to help increase membership among the young, the minority, the married, the single; and

WHEREAS, the membership committee has been working to gain new affiliations to become a part of the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW); therefore, be it

RESOLVED that ODCCW will continue to reach out to the women of the Orlando Diocese with openness to begin their journey in the Council of Catholic Women.

 

SUPPORT FOR THE MILITARY AND THEIR FAMILIES

WHEREAS, military men and women defend our nation both here and abroad; and

WHEREAS, military families, whose loved ones are deployed abroad, are in need of spiritual, emotional, and physical support; and

WHEREAS, the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) encourages prayer for our troops and support of their families; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the women of the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) continue to support our military personnel and their loved ones, while they are away from their families, through prayer, letters and donation of needed items.

 

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

WHEREAS, there are an estimated 27 million slaves in the world today, an estimated 15,000-18,000 of whom are trafficked into the United States annually, the majority of whom are women and girls who are forced to work as domestics, in garment districts, in agricultural industries, and as sex slaves; and

WHEREAS, non-profit agencies, law enforcement, communities of faith, and the government have begun to address this horrific problem through such efforts as the landmark Trafficking Victims Act of 2000; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that members of the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) write to the manufacturers of feminine hygiene products, asking them to include the national 24-hour hotline number, 1-888-373-7888, in all of their product packaging.

 

PRAYER FOR PEACE

WHEREAS, WUCWO has established a Day of Prayer on May 13, 2007, called "Building a Culture of Peace," and

WHEREAS, peace in our world needs to be built, protected, and nurtured by the teaching of human rights for the whole human community; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) participate in the building of peace around the world by gathering in prayer and asking for true peace. Lord, through your gift of the Holy Spirit, you can promise deliverance; let humanity pass from hatred to love, from war to peace, and from suffering to joy.

 

SAVING BABIES

WHEREAS, several years ago Florida adopted the "Safe Baby" law which states that a birth parent (mother or father) may leave an infant, three days old or younger, who does not appear to abused or neglected, in the hands of staff at a fire or ambulance station or hospital, without fear of being arrested or charged with abandonment; and

WHEREAS, Nick Silverio founded "A Safe Haven for Newborns" in the state of Florida and more than 50 troubled mothers have left their newborn babies in a safe place instead of abandoning them; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ODCCW) continue to help save more of these precious lives by supporting this organization financially so that they can continue to reach out to these young mothers and let them know they have a choice about their newborns.

 

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES

WHEREAS, the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) are celebrating the 60th anniversary of their partnership this year; and

WHEREAS, this partnership has provided an opportunity for Catholic women to provide vital services to some of the world's poorest and most vulnerable people through programs that include the Madonna Plan, the Refugee Women's Emergency Fund, Water for Life, and Help-a-Child; therefore, be it

RESOLVED that the Orlando Diocesan Council of Catholic Women encourage its members to continue to provide food, clothing and medical care to the displaced and homeless around the world through the programs of Catholic Relief Services and the National Council of Catholic Women.
