Catholic Church opposes Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)
During the last legislative period, the Freedom of Choice Act was introduced in Congress. The legislation would rescind advancements made in the pro-life movement since Roe v. Wade, i.e. parental consent restrictions, conscience clauses for doctors and nurses, along with other abortion restricting measures. Taxpayer money would be used to pay for abortions and other related matters.
FOCA is not currently included in the legislative agenda, however current legislation keeping government agencies funded expires in March and pro-life protections in these bills will be subject to reversal simply by excluding them.
The U.S. Bishops' Pro-Life Committee with the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment (NCHLA) are coordinating a national postcard campaign to remind our new president and the members of the federal government that at least half of the population wants to see an end to abortion and a greater respect for the life of the unborn. The postcard campaign is an effort to urge the new president and the Congress to retain laws against Federal funding of abortion by opposing any effort to pass the provisions contained in the "FOCA agenda".
Please contact your senator or representative to express your concerns regarding this issue. Individuals and parishes who wish to participate in the postcard campaign may obtain further information on the USCCB website.
