Mrs. Cybriwsky's Third and Fourth Grade at 405 Third Street, Paintsville, KY 41240 US - Home
Welcome to 3rd and 4th grade!Third grade marks the beginning of transition from primary to intermediate grades. The children begin to complete assignments that are more “grown-up”. Our Classroom continues to be and exciting place to learn – indeed, we anticipate a great year!
We have changed the morning routine to allow for more instructional time. First period will be Math with Mrs. Melvin. We will continue to utilize the Saxon Math series. Students can expect to complete more math homework than in previous years. No child will go onto the next lesson until he/she has mastered the previous lesson. Daily assignments will be graded, but not averaged for the report, as students will repeat them until they achieve 100%. If a student needs additional assistance, we will provide it immediately, not after they have performed poorly on a test. Students will be expected to work independently; each student will be expected to complete 6 assignments/ investigative activities/tests per week.

A work folder will be sent home every Thursdays for parents to review. All graded work, the OLM Newsletter, and the lunch menu and Reading Log for the following week will be included in the folder. Tests and the work that students completed in class are included in order to allow parents to keep abreast on their child's performance and provide an opportunity to address potential problems early on.
As homework, students in the 3rd and 4th grades are required to read for 30 minutes each evening, and record this information on a weekly reading log which is included in the folder. Parents are requested to allow the students to be responsible for their own reading logs as this proves to be an excellent exercise in developing responsibility! These logs are a significant part of the reading grade assigned on report cards, so it is essential that they be turned in. If the reading log for the previous week is not turned in by Monday morning, the student will have detention on Tuesday. If you lose a log, or there is not one in the weekly folder, please write the information down on a piece of paper and hand it in. The student will receive full credit.
A homework journal is sent home EVERY night and must be signed and returned the following day. All assignments throughout the day are written in this journal and any unfinished work need to be completed that night. Additional homework may be assigned.
In a perfect world, OLM would have principal and a 3/4 grade teacher. Despite the many demands of being principal, be assured that Sister Lillian's first priority is the classroom! To ensure all bases are covered, Sister Lillian is in the classroom during the morning hours and assumes principal duties in the afternoon. Special classes (i.e. PE, music, art, computers, Spanish, and library/sign language) for students in grades 3 and 4 are scheduled for the afternoon. Mrs. Halliday teaches science and social studies after lunch as well. To ensure consistency, any time Sister Lillian needs to be away from the building (to attend principal's meetings, trainings etc.) Mrs. Halliday will be the substitute.
