The 7th and 8th grade classroom is located on the third floor of Our Lady of the Mountain School. Mrs. Dotty Lewis teaches Language Arts and Social Studies; instruction in Math and Science is provided by Mrs. Rachel Melvin. Students also participate in religion, physical education, art and music, computers, library, sign language and foreign language (Spanish) studies. Subject content includes the following:
SOCIAL STUDIES Content rotates every year between U.S. History and Geography and World History and Geography. Units studied in U.S. History include: • The Civil War • The “Old West” • Immigration • World War I • World War II • The Depression • Civil Rights Movement • Vietnam • Current Events Units studied in World Geography include: • Geography of all continents • Economics, cultures, and governments of world regions and countries • Physical features around the world • Map reading • Current events
SCIENCE Content rotates every year between Earth and Life Science. Units studied in Earth Science include: • Matter • Minerals • Rocks and fossils • Soil • Weather and climate Units studies in Life Science include: • Cells • Heredity • Plants • Human body system • Ecology
LANGUAGE ARTS Content includes: • Literary analysis • Reading class novels • Short stories • Mythology and Traditional Literature Epics • Drama • Study of authors such as Poe, Twain, and Dickens as well as contemporary novelists and poets • Writing memoirs, short stories, persuasive pieces, letters and poetry • Weekly vocabulary and spelling • English grammar • Book projects • Summer reading assignments
