Computer Class: Students in grades K-8 participate in Computer/Technology Class on a weekly basis. All classes take place in our new, state-of-the-art Computer Lab.
Music Class: Students at OLM participate in Music Class every week. On Tuesdays, every classroom spends at least one hour with our music instructor, Mr. Joe Hall, in our music room, located on the third floor of the school. Instruction in a variety of instruments, including recorders, bells, flutophones, and vocals is provided. On Friday, individual students are pulled from class for private lessons in piano, guitar, or string instruments including the cello, viola, and violin. These lessons are provided at no cost to the student or family. In additon, Mr. Hall leads us in song during Mass on Friday morning. Two musical showcases are held each year -- our first, featuring Christmas music, is held during the holidays and the second is held at the end of the school year.
Physical Education: School children at OLM participate in structured physical education classes on a weekly basis. Our Physical Education program is currently lead by instructor Jennifer Bohr. Curriculum includes both cardiovascular exercise and organized games on the spacious grounds of the school. Education is also provided on the importance of daily exercise and proper nutrition with an emphasis on improving overall health and maintaining a balance between work, rest and play. The students in grades K-6 also have outdoor recess (weather permitting) twice a day. Favorite recess activities include basketball, soccer, 4-Square, capture the flag, baseball, and use of the available playground equipment. A new addition to our wellness program is a measured walking loop around the school grounds to encourage our students to keep track of how far they can walk. OLM remains committed to promoting wellness within the school community and is working to meet specific nutritional goals in accordance with new federal policy. Cafeteria lunches (provided by the Paintsville Independent School System) include foods that are low in sugar, sodium, and fat. Available beverages include water, white or chocolate milk, or 100% fruit juice. Parents who pack lunches for students are asked to consider these nutritional guidelines. In addition, OLM is proud to offer a soda-free vending machine -- only water available here! However, children do get hungry during a busy school day, and snacks are welcome during the morning recess. Suggested snacks in accordance with the new federal guidelines include fresh or dried fruits, nuts, granola bars, puddings or yogurt, peanut butter crackers, sunflower seeds, baked chips or crackers, whole grain products, pretzels or popcorn. As a Catholic school, we are proud to provide a holistic focus to our students – emphasizing mind, body, and soul. Our physical education program and new policies related to nutrition allow us to be well prepared to address the physical needs of our students.
Art: Art Class is held on a weekly basis at Our Lady of the Mountains School.
