UNIFORM POLICY Parents are responsible for providing proper clothing to meet the uniform policy; they are also responsible for insuring that the child is dressed appropriately each school day. All clothing listed in the current school uniform catalog is accepted as part of the school uniform. There may be special occasions during the school year when the uniform policy is lifted. On non-uniform days, the students are to wear nice clothing, not blue jeans, or t-shirts, etc. (unless the occasion permits jeans). We ask the cooperation and support of the parents concerning the uniform policy. Whenever a student comes to school in clothing which does not comply with the uniform policy, the parent(s) will be called to bring the proper clothing to school for the student. Uniforms must be clean and neat; parents should see that the clothing is hemmed properly and mended, if necessary. Students may wear clean tennis shoes; students may also wear slip-on, buckle, or tie leather shoes with the uniform. Students may not wear clog-type sandals, jelly shoes, cowboy boots, or hiking boots during school hours. If a student needs to wear snow boots to school, he/she must change to a pair of school uniform shoes during school hours. A student must be clean and neatly combed. The length of the boys' hair in the back must be above the shirt collar. During the school day, when the occasion requires a student to change clothes or shoes, it is the student's responsibility to place the clothing in a teacher designated area. The school is not responsible for any damage involving another student's clothing. From the opening of school until September 30 and From April 1 to the end of school students may wear uniform walk shorts. No jewelry may be worn with the uniform except a wristwatch, a ring, or a SMALL stud (post) or SMALL hoop earrings. A gold chain with a small charm or medal may be worn around the neck. Hair accessories, barrettes, ribbons, or bows must be navy blue, white, or yellow, or any combination of these three colors to match the uniform jumper. No other colors of hair accessories may be worn. Boys' pants should fit around the waist so they are not falling around the hips or any underwear showing. Shirttails should be tucked in at all times. School sweatshirts may be worn as part of the uniform. Elementary Students should wear the navy sweatshirt and middle school students should wear the maroon or beige sweatshirt. The sweatshirts are not to be oversized to cover hands. All uniform needs for both male and female students in grade Kindergarten through grade eight may be purchased from Schoolbelles, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio. There will be a scheduled measuring and ordering day with the company representative in the spring of the school year. An individualized school uniform catalog will also be provided for each family to order uniform supplies whenever needed. On scout meeting days, students in scouting programs may wear the official scouting uniform instead of the school uniform. GRADING POLICY The grading system for Our Lady of Fatima Parish School is: A 100-93 B 92-85 C 84-77 D 76-70 F 69 or below + next to a letter means the highest number only - next to a letter means the lowest number only e.g. A+ = 100 ; A- = 93 Students in Kindergarten will receive progress reports for reading, math, and language readiness, social and motor skills, and work habits checked either: Approximately one month after the beginning of the marking period, an interim report for each child in the school is sent home to the parents with the youngest child enrolled in school; this report indicates the student's academic standing, his/her behavior, work habits, or attendance. These reports help parents to improve the quality of a student's work or to affirm the effort, or lack of, the student is making. All students in the school receive interim reports. A copy of the interim report is kept in the classroom/departmental teacher's student files, a copy is placed in the student's permanent record folder, and a copy is given to the parent. STANDARDIZED TESTING Students in OLOF Parish School participate in the West Virginia State Testing Program (Stanford Achievement Test) for grades Kindergarten through eighth in the spring of the school year; fourth and seventh grade students also participate in the West Virginia writing assessment program usually in the second semester of the year. In the fall, eighth grade students participate in the ACT Explore Test. This evaluates career interests and academic subject area achievement. Results of the spring testing are usually returned in early summer; the student's individual test report form is sent home as soon as it is received. Parents should study the results carefully, if they have any questions or concerns, they should arrange a conference with either the classroom teacher or principal. The writing sample evaluations for the seventh grade are usually returned in the fall of the following school year; the results are mailed to the parents as soon as they are received. The state-testing program consists of the Metropolitan Reading Readiness Test for Kindergarten and the Stanford Achievement Test for grades one through eight. Individual results of all standardized tests administered in the school are recorded and placed in the student's permanent record folder. HOMEWORK Homework is important because it is a valuable aid in helping students make the most of their experience in school. OLOF Parish School faculty gives homework because it is useful in reinforcing what has been learned in class, prepare students for upcoming lessons, extends and generalizes concepts, teaches responsibility, and helps students develop positive study habits. The type amount of homework varies from grade to grade; however, parents should understand that the assignments are meaningful and important to the learning process in the academic development of the student. We ask that the parents monitor homework by providing a quiet area where the child may work and any materials needed by the student to complete the assignment. Parents, especially of the younger children, should help students learn to organize study time and insist students complete the assigned work. Parents are also asked to help children learn how to work on long range assignments, such as monthly book reports, chapter or unit projects or tests, and research papers so that the work is completed and ready to be turned in on the designated date. Whenever a student consistently does not turn in or complete homework or class work assignments, a teacher will set up his/her own system of notifying parents by written notice to be sent home to the parents indicating the date of the incomplete assignment(s). A homework hotline is available each day by calling (304) 523-2861 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on the following day; the homework or class work for each class is recorded daily on a telephone answering machine. A web page for the school will also be available with information. Parents are encouraged to call the hotline or check the web page for assignments and classroom news. TRANSFER STUDENTS New students whose families move into OLOF Parish during the New Year will be admitted to the school provided there is a vacancy in that grade and we are able to meet the student's needs. Transfer students are required to provide health records, report cards, reading progress records, and any standardize testing scores available. If a student has been tested for any learning problems, the parent is to have the records of the testing and any recommendations of the diagnostician transferred to the school. If the class has reached the maximum number, the student's name will be placed on the waiting list. Any student who has experienced any behavioral or discipline referrals from their former school is obligated to inform OLOF Parish School. New students who enroll at OLOF Parish School will be admitted on probation for a nine week period. At the end of the 9 weeks, the parents, classroom teacher(s), and the principal will meet to determine the progress and attitude of the student. A final decision on the student's continued enrollment will be made at that time. Transfer student are encouraged, if possible, to enroll at the beginning of the school year or at the beginning of a marking period. Students enrolled at OLOF Parish School who plan to transfer to another school should notify the classroom teacher and the principal at least two weeks before the transfer is effective. This allows sufficient time for the records of the students to be prepared, for the classroom teacher to complete the report card and permanent record folder, and for the student to turn in rented or borrowed materials that belong to the school. Before any transcript can be mailed to the new school, parents must sign a release form indicating the name and address of the school where the records are to be sent. A transcript fee to cover the cost of certified postage and paper would be charged for each transfer of records. Parents are responsible to meet any financial obligation to the school before the last day of the student's attendance at OLOF Parish School. All financial obligations must be met before students' records will be transferred.
