Our Lady Of Fatima at 545 Norway Avenue, Huntington, WV 25705-1599 US - Women's Guild Prayer Shawl Ministry for Hospice

Women's Guild
Prayer Shawl Ministry for Hospice

What is a Prayer Shawl? It is a shawl that is knitted, crocheted, woven or sewn while the maker says prayers. There are prayers said by the maker before starting and prayers while making the shawl.

Purpose:  Charlene Farrell of OLF and CEO of Hospice asked if a prayer shawl ministry could be started at Fatima for Hospice House. The shawls made by this ministry will be given to a dying person and their family at Hospice House.

Goal: That all parishioners at OLF will use their God given talents in stewardship by making prayer shawls.

Distribution: Father Jim has agreed to bless the prayer shawls. Father suggests that they be blessed at a designated Mass with the makers present. The shawls will be given to Hospice House Of Huntington.

A Prayer Shawl Card will be given with the following verse written by Stella Reed:

We are sending this Prayer Shawl with love in the stitches and our prayers too.
We have asked Our Blessed Mother that they turn out just right, be a comfort to you,
and pleasing to your sight.
As you use it in your nights and days, May the Peace of God be with you always.

God Bless You from
Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church

Group vs. non-group: Prayer Shawl Ministries often form groups, where several makers get together to pray and make the prayer shawls. I realize that in everyone's busy life, it might be hard to fit one more meeting. Even if you are not meeting in a group you can make prayer shawls. There will be basket in the vestibule of the church to place the completed prayer shawls. Please, put a note with you name and number of hours with the shawl. Volunteer hours are needed for Medicare.

Handouts: There are handouts in the prayer shawl basket in the vestibule of the church.

Here is an example of a prayer to say before starting your project:

A SHAWL MAKER’S PRAYER

Dear Lord; Bless my hands as I knit(crochet) today. May each twist of the yarn guide me to create a pattern of love and comfort in my work and remind me of Your ultimate protection. Wrap me in your spirit so that I will be more caring towards those in need. Grant me patience as I create this shawl. And bless my handiwork as it travels to bring comfort and peace to someone in need of Your warming embrace. Amen.

To date: the ladies of OLF have made and given 50 prayer shawls to Hospice House and to members of the parish in need of prayers.

Here are some of the Thank You notes we have received:

Father,
My Dad died on February 7th, in Hospice House in Hgtn, with one of your prayer shawls over him. I could feel the prayers that the shawl makers prayed and they lifted me up. I don't know what my Dad was feeling then but my faith tells me that he could feel those prayers too. Please tell the folks who make those that they are giving people a very precious gift. I want them to know how important the work they do is to those who are leaving this world and those they leave behind.
God Bless You All,
Elaine Toth

To the ladies who stitch prayer shawls,
Thank you for the beautiful shawl and the prayers sent with it. My husband passed away while at the Hospice House. I will treasure the shawl in his memory.
Love in Christ,<br /> Lorraine Childers

Hospice is looking for Bereavement  Volunteers
- those who would be willing to stay in touch with the families of Hospice patients after their loved ones have passed away.  This involves a telephone call (or a visit if you so choose) about once a month or so for a year.  Let me know if this is something you'd like to know more about.
