B.E.A.M.

Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry (B.E.A.M.) is a non-profit, ecumenical outreach agency dedicated to providing short-term assistance to beaches area residents since 1985.  B.E.A.M.'s efforts are focused on helping families stay together in their homes and help them become self-sufficient.

Purpose: B.E.A.M. provides financial assistance with rent, utilities and prescriptions. Other types of assistance include food, personal care items, clothing and local bus tickets.

Events/Programs: B.E.A.M. has special annual projects for children and families in our beaches community. Back to School with B.E.A.M. takes place every August and is our largest and most comprehensive outreach effort (clothing, medical, haircuts, etc. Holiday Food Baskets for families at Thanksgiving. Holiday Party for beaches children in December - Christmas toys for families with children ages infant to 15 years.

Program Needs: B.E.A.M. is in continual need of funds for financial assistance and special programs. B.E.A.M. also has an ongoing need for food and personal care items (such as toilet paper, soap, shampoo, toothbrushes and diapers). B.E.A.M. volunteers sort, shelve and pack food for about 800 clients each month. Volunteers help families apply for food stamps and Medicaid, meet with families to determine eligibility for financial assistance.


Bereavement

Purpose: To provide emotional and spiritual support for parishioners who have lost loved ones.

Events/Programs: While the group meets bi-monthly (Thursday's of each month), members are available to take calls at any time.

Program Needs: Those who have gone through their own bereavement period and can share their personal experiences with others are encouraged to participate in this ministry.


Elizabeth Ministry

Purpose: Based on the visitation of the Virgin Mary to Elizabeth, this program empowers women to relate to each other in a spirit of sisterhood regarding issues related to childbearing.

Events/Programs: This ministry provides woman-to-woman support to celebrate new life when a child is born or adopted and to share the grief when infertility, miscarriage, failed adoption, or infant death occurs.

Program Needs: Volunteers are welcome to share their own experience through this ministry.

Knights of Columbus

Purpose: The Fr. Murphy Council Knights of Columbus calls all men over the age of 18 years to serve the Catholic faith, their family and their community and gives them the opportunity to perform charitable work and defend the Catholic perspective in our community within the context of a fraternal organization with strong ties to the Church.

Events/Programs: The Knights of Columbus have been very active in Respect Life and other programs which support our youth, the aged, and the infirm.

Marriage Rnewal

Purpose: A unique approach to revitalizing Christian marriage, Diocesan Marriage Renewal helps couples explore important areas of their relationship in a spirit of love and understanding

Events/Programs: Weekend programs are offered 5-6 times a year at Marywood. Additional support is offered to couples through “Circle Meetings” held on the 2nd Friday of each month from September through May.


Mission House

Purpose: Mission House is an ecumenical and non-profit organization dedicated to helping the homeless throughout the beach community. Mission House is committed to minister to the material, physical and spiritual needs of the homeless by providing services and referral contacts. The goal of Mission House is to assist the homeless, who receive our services, to be homeless no longer.

Program Needs: Volunteers are needed to help collect, deliver and organize donated food items. Volunteers are also needed to cook, deliver and serve meals. This is an ideal volunteer activity for the whole family to do together.


Rebuilding Lives/Single Again

Purpose: Ministry to the separated and divorced.

Events/Programs: Qualified facilitators provides a safe, caring and understanding environment for someone to come during a time of healing and rebuilding. It is a time of transition during separation nor divorce. You can expect an atmosphere of confidentiality, a supportive environment, growth through healing, prayer and sharing.


Respect Life

Purpose: To increase the awareness of our parishioners and community of pro-life activities.

Events/Programs: Letter and petition campaigns are frequently organized to encourage our elected officials to support pro-life legislation. On Respect Life Sunday, we participate in the "Rosary Chain"

Through the phone tree at Our Lady Star of the Sea, we voice our concerns to federal and state legislators as bills regarding these issues are being considered to become law. If you are interested in being a part of this phone tree, please contact Bob Grano @ 273-0256 or Florence Bischof @ 273-2904.

Respite Care

Purpose: The Respite Care program provides compassion and support to the homebound and their caregivers. We offer companionship for the homebound allowing the caregiver temporary relief from the stresses of caring for their loved one.

Events/Programs: This free service is available to caregivers of the ill, infirmed, young or old, and without regards to race or creed. We will provide the caregiver with personal time each week to do whatever he or she may wish. Respite volunteers are not permitted to administer medication, cook or perform housekeeping tasks.

Program Needs: Volunteers are needed.


Rosary for the Sick

Purpose: To visit the homes of parishioners who are ill or homebound to say the rosary with them. This prayer is comforting to those for whom they are intended as well as their family members.

Sponsor Couple Program

Purpose: To help engaged couples discover more about themselves in preparation for a Christ-centered marriage in the Catholic faith.

Events/Programs: This ministry is coordinated with the diocesan Engaged Encounter/Pre-Cana marriage preparation programs. Sponsor couples are asked to meet with engaged couples one or more times to discuss important issues regarding married life, especially those which surface in marriage instructions.

Program Needs: Additional couples are encouraged to participate in this meaningful and rewarding ministry. Training is provided.


St. Vincent DePaul
