Holy Family Parish at 27800 Annapolis Road, Inkster, MI 48141 US - Church History

Church History

In the late thirties, an influx of workers, many from the South, came to the picturesque farmland that was later to be the City of Inkster.  They came for employment in the auto industry, in the plants of River Rouge and Willow Run, and in the medical complex known as Eloise.  Some were black Catholics who found a spiritual home in Detroit’s St. Benedict the Moor, but that was some fifteen miles away.

Correspondence between the pastor of St. Benedict’s, Fr. Timothy Murphy, and the Provincial of his religious order, the Holy Ghost Fathers shows that there were immediate plans to build in Inkster.  One letter said that a church building could be put up “within a month from the day they began work.”  The year was 1941 and World War II soon halted construction hopes.

In the summer of 1945, a religious vacation school (sponsored by the Archdiocese of Detroit) caused a revival of interest in the parish project.  Later that year, the first Catholic foundation was the home of Mr. Charles McNair, by Fr. Charles Diehl, C.S.Sp., and pastor of St. Benedicts.

Religious education was offered on Sundays in the administration building of the Carver homes.  At the start, the Liturgy was offered in various homes, such as the Coleman residence.  Finally, a “Quonset hut” on Hickory St. was converted to church use.

St. Benedicts and Holy Family were both ministered to, by priests of the Congregation of the Holy Ghost.  Holy Ghost Fathers who served at Holy Family since 1945 were Fathers: Fr. Louis A. Dietrich, Fr. Harold McNeil, Fr. Sylvester Fusan, Fr. James Sullivan, Fr. Charles Behl, Fr. Frank Kanda, Fr. Vincent I. Cronin, Fr. Siegfried Eckert, Patrick S. Bascio, Fr. William Joyce, Fr. Martin Conroy, Fr. John P. McAndrew, Fr. John Rondeau, Fr. Constantine Conan, Fr. Frank Kanda, Fr. Festes, Fr. John Lehner, Fr. Antonisami, Fr. Richard Leliaert, and Fr. Gary Morelli.

The pastorate of Father Fusan covered seventeen years from 1953 to 1970, the period of transition from mission status to parish then from Quonset hut to the present facility.  On December 6, 1966, Cardinal Dearden established Holy Family as a territorial parish, taking in much of south Inkster and parts of Westland and Romulus.

In 1963, under the direction of Fr. Fusan, the modernistic church, rectory, and hall had been constructed.  On March 22, 1981, Bishop Walter J. Schoenherr presided at a memorial dedication naming the hall, “Father Fusan Hall”.

The principle organizations of the parish today are: the Parish Council, Men’s Club, Ladies Guild, Youth Ministry, and St. Vincent de Paul Society, and Religious Education.

The parish motto, “Let our family be your Family”, describes the goal of outreach to the community.  We thank you Holy Ghost Fathers for your dedication as we now celebrate 63 years of service.
