Oratory of Divine Mercy at 8 Garfield Ave, Norwich, CT 06360-6908 US - How to Offer the Traditional Mass

How to Offer the Traditional Mass
IN THE SACRISTY In the sacristy, prepare the chalice after washing your hands, as commanded in chapter thirty of the Book of Exodus. The vessel which is to contain the actual Blood of Jesus Christ should be of precious metal. The purificator, a folded linen strip, is used to clean the chalice and wipe your mouth and fingers. This lies across the chalice. On top is the paten, a small plate of precious metal, on which lies your host. In fidelity to Christ's example at the Passover supper, the hosts must be unleavened. The pall, a piece of stiffened linen, rests on the paten and is covered with the chalice veil in the liturgical color of the day, the cross towards the front. The corporal, a square piece of linen on which the chalice and hosts will rest, is folded and put into the burse, a stiffened wallet in the color of the day, which is laid on top of the chalice veil, the opening towards the rear. Before Mass, you must put on the liturgical vestments. The chasuble, stole and maniple conform to the liturgical color of the day, which varies according to the feast. Before staring to vest, you must pray to serve God without impurity of mind or body. Confide the intention for which your are to offer sacrifice. The rubrics of the Byzantine rite specify: " The priest who is about to celebrate the holy mysteries must have confessed his sins, be reconciled to all men and have nothing against anyone. He must keep his heart from bad thoughts, be pure, and fast till the time of sacrifice." The vestments are laid out in the order in which you will put them on. The amice is an oblong piece of linen about two feet square used to cover the neck. Kiss the cross, touch the vestment to your head, then put it on your shoulders, crossing the strings over your breast and tie them around your waist. Pray that the amice may be a helmet of salvation to help you repel the assaults of the devil. Next put on the alb and pray for purity and cleanliness of heart, that-washed in the Blood of the Lamb-you may enjoy the eternal delights of Heaven. Now comes the girdle or cincture. Double the cord of linen. wool, cotton or silk around your waist, and ask the Lord to gird you with the cincture of purity and to extinguish in you the fires of lust. Now for the maniple. Kiss the cross and place it on your left forearm praying the you may worthily bear the maniple of sorrow so that you may one day enjoy the rewards of your labor. Put on the stole-the symbol of the Priesthood-kiss the cross and pray that the robe of immortality. lost by Adam's sin, may be restored to you. Cross the right part of the stole over the left across the breast and secure the stole by the cincture. Lastly put on the chasuble. After vesting, bow to the crucifix, bless yourself with holy water and leave the sacristy. Carry the chalice in your left hand, the burse held in place by the right. AT THE ALTAR At the altar, stand before the lowest step. ( If wearing a biretta, hand it to the server. If alone place biretta on the first pew.) If the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in the tabernacle, genuflect; otherwise make a profound bow to the crucifix. Ascend the altar steps with your right foot first. At the center of the altar, place the chalice on the left ( the Gospel side) remove the corporal from the burse and unfold it in the center of the altar. The burse is also stood on the Gospel side, and the veiled chalice positioned in the center of the corporal. Turn and move to the Epistle side with hands joined. ( The correct position for joined hands is at the level of the breast, palm to palm, fingers straight and slightly pointing upwards, with the right thumb over the left, in the form of a cross.) Open the Missal at the Introit, then turn and walk back to the center of the altar. At the center, make a medium bow to the crucifix; then, turn by the Epistle side with joined hands and eyes lowered, descend to floor level to begin Mass. ( Every time you turn during Mass-except at the Orate fratres and final blessing-turn and return by the Epistle side.) Stand at center, hands joined, genuflect on the first step. Make the Sign of the Cross, saying aloud the In nomine Patris, with left hand flat under your breast and touching your forehead, breast, left and right shoulders with your right fingertips. You must bow your head to the Cross for the Gloria Patri at the end of the psalm-and any other time the prayer is said during Mass. Stand erect after the word Sancto. At the Adjutorium nostrum, make the Sign of the Cross. Bow profoundly with joined hands and begin the Confiteor. At the mea culpa, place your left hand below your breast and strike your breast 3xs with the extended and joined fingers of your right hand. remain bowing for the people's Misereatur; then, after replying Amen, stand erect, with hand joined, while the people recite the Confiteor. (Omit this part if no one is present.) At the end of the prayers, recite the Misereatur; then, while making the Sign of the Cross, say the Indulgentiam. Bowing moderately, continue with the Deus tu conversus. At the end of the verses, stand upright, extend hands to the width of shoulders without raising them, and rejoin them at the same time saying Oremus. Ascend the altar, with joined hands, saying silently the Aufer a nobis. Bowing moderately, rest your joined hands on the edge of the altar, the tips of your little fingers against the front of the edge, saying silently the Oramus te, Domine. Recalling the saints whose relics are in the altar, place your hands flat on the altar outside or the corporal, and kiss middle of the altar. Continuing the prayer, move directly to the Epistle side, facing the altar, and begin in an audible voice, the Introit. Begin with the Sign of the Cross, then join hands for the remainder of the prayer. At the Gloria Patri, turn slightly and bow towards the crucifix. Do not cross yourself when repeating the antiphon. After the Introit, return to the center of the altar with joined hands and without bowing to the crucifix, immediately begin the Kyrie. As soon as the Kyrie is finished, start the Gloria, separating your hands horizontally and raising them to shoulder level before rejoining them and bowing your head at the word Deo. Stand erect, with joined hands, and continue to the end, reading from the center altar card if necessary. Bow to the crucifix at the words adoramus te, gratias agimus, Jesu Christe, suscipe deprecationem and Jesu Christe again. At the words cum Sancto Spiritu make the Sign of the Cross; then, without rejoining hands, after the Amen place your hands outside of the corporal and kiss the center of the altar. Rejoin hands and turn by the Epistle side with downcast eyes, greet the people with the Dominus vobiscum, while extending your hands to the width of your shoulders horizontally. Rejoining them, turn back by the Epistle side. From the center, move to the Missal. Face the altar, and say Oremus, bowing your head to the Cross, extending your hands to shoulder height and width, rejoining them and extending them again. ( During the reading of the Collects, bow your head to the Cross at the Holy Name and bow to the Missal at the name of Mary, the Saint of the day or the Pope.) At the end of the prayer, on the words per Dominum or in unitate, rejoin your hands for the Amen. After the Collects come the 1st lesson, the Epistle. Place the palms of your hands on the Missal during the reading-though you may pick up the Missal if you wish. Following the Epistle come the Gradual, Alleluia, or Tract and on 5 major feast days, the Sequence. Read them aloud, still holding the Missal, and bow as during the Collects. From the Epistle side, move with joined hands to the center of the altar and raise your eyes to the Cross, then cast them down and bow profoundly-without laying your hands on the altar- to say silently the Munda cor meum. The Missal must now be moved to the right side of the altar and placed diagonally on the altar. Stand before the Missal with joined hands and say aloud Dominus vobiscum. At the Sequentia, lay your left hand on the Missal, while making the Sign of the Cross with the thumb of your open right hand, 1st at the beginning of the Gospel passage. Then-with left hand on your breast-trace the cross with your thumb on your forehead, mouth and breast. Read the Gospel aloud with hands joined. IF you need to bow your head or genuflect, you do so towards the Missal. If you must turn a page, you use your right hand, laying the left on the altar. At the end of the Gospel. raise the Missal with both hands, and bow to kiss the Missal where you signed the cross, saying the Per evangelica dicat. Stand erect, and replace the Missal on the stand which is now moved diagonally closer to the middle of the altar, next to the corporal. ( You may now give a sermon. If so, remove your maniple and lay it aside) Following the homily, move to the center of the altar for the Creed and, if necessary, put the maniple back on. As you say the words Credo in unum Deum, extend your hands, lift them to the height of your shoulders and rejoin them at your breast, bowing at the same time to the Cross. Bow when you mention the Holy Name. At the words Et incarnatus est, lay your hands on the altar outside the corporal and genuflect slowly on your right knee, without bowing you head. Rise after the words Et homo factus est. Bow your head at the words simul adoratur. At the end of the Creed, with the words at vitam venturi saeculi, make the Sign of the Cross. At the Amen, place your hands flat on the altar outside of the corporal and kiss the altar. Turn by the Epistle side and say Dominus vobiscum, extending your hands, rejoining them and turning back the same way. Bowing to the Cross, extend and rejoin your hands in a straight line, saying aloud the Oremus and reading the Offertory from the Missal. Remove the chalice veil from the chalice with both hands, folding it and placing it on your right, outside of the corporal. Laying your left hand on the altar outside of the corporal, take the chalice by the stem with your right hand and place it outside of the corporal on your right. ( ALL HOSTS TO BE CONSECRATED MUST NOW BE PLACED ON CORPORAL.) Take the pall from the chalice and lay it on the folded chalice veil. With your right hand, take the paten with the altar bread on it and lift it chest-high with the thumb and forefingers of both hands over the corporal. Looking up to the Cross, then down at the host, say silently the Suscipe sancte Pater. At the end of this prayer, lower the paten close to the corporal and trace the Sign of the Cross towards yourself, then form left to right, before sliding the altar bread off of the paten onto the front of the corporal-without touching the host. With left hand on altar, place the paten halfway under the corporal on your right and close the ciborium or pyx if necessary. With joined hands, move to the Epistle corner. Take chalice by the stem with left hand and wipe the inside with the purificator, which you then hang over your left thumb. With right hand, take the wine cruet and pour almost half the wine into the chalice, saying nothing. Make Sign of the Cross over the water cruet, begin the prayer Deus qui humanae substantiae. At the words per hujus aquae, take the cruet and pour a drop or two into the chalice. Bow towards the Cross as you say the Holy Name. You may wipe away any drops from the side of the chalice with the purificator before placing the chalice next to the corporal while still holding the purificator return to the center of the altar. Fold the purificator over that half of the paten still showing. Take the chalice by the stem with right hand and holding the base with your left, lift the chalice until the rim is level with your eyes and looking at the Cross, say silently the Offerimus tibi. At the end of the prayer, lower the chalice and make the Sign of the Cross with chalice over the center of the altar ( NOT OVER THE HOST ). Place the chalice in the center of the corporal and hold the chalice base with your left fingers to prevent spilling. Replace the pall on top. Bow moderately, join your hands and lay your fingers on the front of the altar, saying silently the prayer In spiritu humilitatis. Stand erect, look up to Heaven for a moment, extend and raise your hands, then lower your eyes and join hands, saying the Veni, Sanctificator. At the word benedic lay your left hand outside of the corporal and make the Sign of the Cross with your right hand over the host and chalice. Now move with joined hands to the Epistle side for the lavabo. If server present, hold the tips of thumbs and forefingers together over the dish-in front of, not over, the altar-while the server pours water over them. If no server make due. Saying the Lavabo inter innocentes, dry hands on the towel, bowing towards the Cross as you say the Gloria Patri. ( The Gloria Patri is omitted in Masses for the Dead.) Lay left hand on the altar and replace towel. Return to the center with joined hands while finishing prayer. Look up to Cross, then look down; and, bow slightly with joined hands on the altar, saying silently the Suscipe sancta Trinitas. Lay your hands palms downwards on the altar outside of the corporal, and kiss the altar. Join hands and with eyes cast down, turn to the people for the last time before Communion. Extend hands in a straight line and rejoin them raising your voice a little, saying Orate, fratres, turn back this time by the Gospel side while you complete the prayer silently. At the end of the response, reply Amen silently. extend your hands, palms facing one another, and-without saying Oremus- read the Secret prayers from the Missal. At the end of the final Secret prayer, pause, lay your right hand flat on the altar and, with your left hand, find the Preface in the Missal. Lay your left hand on the altar, say aloud Per omnias saecula saeculorum. With hands still flat on the altar, say aloud Dominus vobiscum. Then raise hands to shoulder height, palms facing one another, and say aloud the Sursum corda and the Gratias agamus, rejoin your hands as you say these words. At the words Deo nostro, look up at the Cross, then bow your head. ( The Preface is said aloud standing with hands extended.) At the end rejoin your hands and bow moderately for the Sanctus, which is said in a slightly quieter voice. Bell rung once. At the Beneditus, stand erect and make the Sign of the Cross. Lay right hand on the altar and with your left hand find the beginning of the Canon in the Missal. The Canon is said almost entirely silent. At the Te igitur, look up at the Cross, extend and lift your hands, then look down, join hands, bow low and place your fingertips on the edge of the altar. After the words rogamus et petimus, lay your hands flat on the altar outside of the corporal and kiss the altar. Stand erect and rejoin hands. After the word benedicas, lay your left hand on the altar outside of the corporal and with the right make the Sign of the Cross slowly 3xs over the host and chalice saying haec+dona, haec+munera, haec+sancta sacrificia illibata. After the 3rd cross, do not rejoin hands, but hold them extended at shoulder height, palms facing each other and fingers straight. This remains the normal position of the hands for the whole of the Canon. The name of the Pope and local Bishop are added in the ablative case. At the Memento, Domine, raise and join your hands in front of your face and bow your head for a moment recalling those among the living for whom you wish to pray. Stand erect again with hands extended, continue with et omnium circumstantium. (The Communicantes links the sacrifice with the Mother of God, the Apostles and twelve early martyrs.) Bow your head towards the Missal at the name Mariae and towards the Cross at Jesu Christi. At the words per eundem, join your hands. At the Hanc igitur, the bell is rung once as you extend your hands over the chalice, your right thumb over the left and hands opened palms downward. At the Per Christum, rejoin your hands. Continue with the Quam oblationem. After the word quaesumus, rest your left hand on the altar and make the Sign of the Cross 3xs over the offerings saying bene+dictam, ad+scriptam, ra+tam; once over the host as you say Cor+pus; and once over the chalice as you say San+guis. Then rejoin your hands, bowing your head as you say Jesu Christi. As you say elevatis oculis, look up to Heaven, then immediately look down and bow your head at the words gratias agen. At the word bene+dixit, make the Sign of the Cross over the host with your right hand held straight. As you come to the actual words of consecration, bow over the altar, leaning forearms on the altar and looking at the host, slowly and reverently, in a low voice, pronounce Our Lord's own words. Immediately after the words Hoc est enim Corpus Meum. stand erect, then genuflect on you right knee, still holding the HOST with both hands over the altar. Stand immediately and looking at the HOST, slowly raise Our Lord straight up before over the corporal, so CHRIST may be adored by the people. HOC EST ENIM CORPUS MEUM From this point until the ablution after Communion-out of reverence for any fragments of the Body of Christ which might adhere to your fingers-you must hold together the thumb and forefinger of each hand and do not separate them, even to turn the pages of the Missal. You also place your hands on the corporal-rather than outside of it-during any genuflection, until your fingers have been purified after Communion. Rising from the 2nd genuflection, remove the pall from the chalice and lay it on the Epistle side. As always, steady the foot of the chalice with your left hand. You may rub your thumbs and forefinger over the chalice to allow any fragments of the consecrated HOST to fall into the wine. Stand erect, take the chalice by the stem in both hands, and say Simili modo, postquam coenatum est, lift the chalice a little and replace the chalice on the corporal, still holding it. Bow at the words gratias agens and, at the word bene+dixit, make the Sign of the Cross over the chalice with your right hand, your finger and thumb still together. Holding the stem with your right hand and the foot of the chalice with the left, say deditque discipulis suis dicens: Accipite et bibite ex eo omnes. Bend over the altar, leaning your forearms on it, and lift the chalice a little, with the 3 fingers of your left hand under the base. In the same low, attentive voice, pronounce the words of consecration of the Precious Blood. As you say the words in remissionem peccatorum, stand upright. HIC EST ENIM CALIX SANGUINIS MEI, NOVI ET AETERNI TESTAMENTI: MYSTERIUM FIDEI: QUI PRO VOBIS ET PRO MULTIS EFFUNDETUR IN REMISSIONEM PECCATORUM. Replacing the chalice on the altar, lay your hands on the corporal and genuflect. Stand, take the chalice in both hands, the stem between the 2nd and 3rd fingers of your right hand, the left supporting the base, and lift the chalice slowly over the corporal so the people may worship the BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST. Put the chalice back on the corporal, cover the chalice with the pall and genuflect again. Stand erect and holding the hands extended, with fingers and thumbs joined, continue with the Unde et memores, the anamnesis or commemoration of Christ and His mysteries. At the words de tuis donis ac datis, join your hands, place your left hand on the corporal and, with the right hand, slowly make the Sign of the Cross 3xs over the HOST and chalice saying hostiam+puram, hostiam+sanctum, hostiam+immaculatam. At the words Panem+sanctum, make the Sign of the Cross over the HOST and at the words calicem+salutis, over the chalice. Extend your hands as before and continue with the Supra quae. Bowing low, begin the Supplices te rogamus with hands joined on the front edge of the altar. At the words ex hac altaris, place your hands flat on the corporal and kiss the altar. Stand erect, rejoin your hands. At the word Cor+pus, place your left hand on the corporal and make the Sign of the Cross over the HOST, and at the word San+guinem, make the Sign of the Cross over the chalice. Holding your left hand at your breast, sign yourself with the cross at the words omni benedictione, then rejoin your hands. For the commemoration of the dead, extend your hands again, joining them before your face at the words in sommo pacis. Bowing slightly and looking at the Body of Christ, pray silently for the faithful departed who you wish to commemorate. Stand erect again with hands apart, continue with the Ipsis Domine. At the end of the prayer, bow your head at the word Christum-the only time this happens in the Mass. Raise your voice for the 3 words Nobis quoque peccatoribus and, laying your left hand on the corporal, strike your breast with the tips of the 3rd, 4th and 5th fingers of your right hand. Avoid touching vestments with your thumb or forefinger. Continue with hands extended, bow slightly towards the Missal if the Saint of the day is mentioned. At the concluding words of the Canon, Per Christum Dominum nostrum, rejoin your hands, without saying Amen. Laying your left hand on the corporal, make the Sign of the Cross with your right hand over the HOST and chalice saying sancti+ficas, vivi+ficas, bene+dictis. With your right hand, remove the pall from the chalice, laying it on the right, place your hands on the corporal and genuflect. Take the HOST with the right thumb and forefinger and the stem of the chalice with the left hand, make the Sign of the Cross 3xs with the HOST over the bowl of the chalice saying Per ip+sum, et cum ip+so, then make the Sign of the Cross 2xs more over the corporal between yourself and the chalice as you say Deo Patri + omnipotenti, in unitate Spiritus + Sancti. Laying the chalice slightly, with the right fingers resting on the rim and the HOST held upright, say omnis honor et gloria. Put the chalice back on the corporal, the HOST in front of it, rub the fingers of both hands over the chalice and replace the pall, before placing your hands on the corporal and genuflecting. With hands still on the corporal, stand erect and conclude the Canon aloud. After response, rejoin hands and bow your head to the Body of Christ, saying Oremus. Stand erect, begin the preparation for Communion with the introduction to the Lord's prayer, spoken aloud. Beginning the Pater noster, extend your hands and look at the HOST. Respond with a silent Amen. With your left hand on the corporal, take the paten from under the corporal and wipe it with the purificator, which you will then lay on the Epistle side. Hold the paten on its side on the altar outside of the corporal, facing inwards, between the forefinger and second finger while saying silently the embolism, the Libera nos. At the words da propitius pacem, place your left hand on your breast and make the Sign of the Cross on yourself with the paten, kissing the upper edge. With your left forefinger, press the top edge of the HOST and slip the paten under It, arranging the HOST in the center with your left forefinger. Holding the base of the chalice with your left hand, uncover it and genuflect with your hands on the corporal. Stand up, take the HOST in your right hand, hold it over the chalice and, using your left hand, break It evenly in two saying the per eundem Dominum. Bow your head at Jesum Christum and put the right half of the HOST onto the paten. With you right hand, break a small fraction off the half in your left hand, saying qui tecum vivit et regnat. Holding the fragment over the chalice, lay the left half next to the right on the paten, saying in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus. The per omnia is said aloud. Holding the stem of the chalice with the left hand, make the Sign of the Cross with the fragment 3xs over the chalice saying aloud Pax + Domini sit + semper vobis+cum. After response drop the fragment of HOST into the chalice, saying silently Haec commixtio and bow your head at Jesu Christi. Purify your fingers over the chalice, cover it with the pall and genuflect. Stand up, bow moderately to the HOST and join your hands to say aloud the Agnus Dei. As you say miserere nobis, place your left hand on the corporal and strike your breast with the 3rd, 4th and 5th fingers of the right hand. Keep your left hand on the corporal until the end of the prayer and strike breast again with your right hand at the 2nd miserere nobis, and the dona nobis pacem. Still bowing moderately, join your hands, rest them on the edge of the altar, fix your eyes on the HOST, saying silently the 3 prayers before Communion. At the end of the Perceptio Corporis tui, stand upright, place your hands on the corporal and genuflect, saying the Panem caelestem accipiam. Bow slightly, pick up the two halves of the HOST in your left hand. (The best way to do this is to push the two halves together to the top of the paten with the left thumb and forefinger, remove them from the paten with the right thumb and forefinger and place them into the left hand.) The paten is picked up with the right hand and placed between the forefinger and second finger of the left hand, which is held just above the altar. Strike your breast with your right hand as you raise your voice slightly to say the words Domine, non sum dignus. Continue the prayer of the Centurion silently, saying the invocation 3xs in the same way. Stand up, place the right half of the HOST on the top of the left half, take the two pieces together between your right thumb and forefinger and make the Sign of the Cross in front of yourself over the paten saying silently the Corpus Domini nostri, bowing your head at the Holy Name. To receive Communion, lean forward with your forearms on the altar, with the paten under your chin, reverently place the HOST into your mouth. Laying the paten on the corporal, purify your fingers over it and stand straight with your hands joined before your face. With eyes closed, meditate for a moment on the Blessed Sacrament. Then, with your left hand on the base of the chalice, remove the pall and genuflect, saying the Quid retribuam silently. Stand up, take the paten and gather together any particles of the HOST from the corporal. Hold the paten in your left hand, wipe the crumbs into the chalice with your right thumb and forefinger. After purifying your fingers over the chalice, pick it up by the stem with your right hand and, hold the paten under it, make the Sign of the Cross in front of yourself with the chalice, saying silently Sanguis Domini nostri and bow your head at the Holy Name. With the paten beneath your chin, drink the Precious Blood. Cover the chalice with the pall and place it towards the Gospel side of the corporal. Genuflect and place any HOSTS you have consecrated onto the paten. Taking the paten in your left hand, take one HOST with the forefinger and thumb of right hand and hold it upright over the paten. Turning by your right side towards the people looking at the HOST, say aloud the Ecce, Agnus Dei. After response administer Communion saying the words Corpus Domini nostri Jesu Christi, make the Sign of the Cross with the HOST over the paten in front of each communicant. Place the HOST on the person's tongue saying Amen. Communicant should make no response. After Communion, return directly to the center of the altar. Place the paten on the corporal, put the chalice back in the middle of the corporal and, if there are any fragments on the paten wipe them with your forefinger into the chalice and place the paten on the Epistle side. ( Be sure to gather up any fragments with the paten and wipe them into the chalice.) Take the paten between your left forefinger and second finger, rest your hand on the corporal. With your right hand, hold the chalice over the altar on the Epistle side while saying, in silence, the Quod ore sumpsimus. If no server, pour wine into the chalice. Raise the chalice a little and gently turn the chalice gathering up any drops of the Precious Blood or fragments of the HOST. Hold paten under the chalice, drink the ablution. Place paten on Gospel side of corporal, take the chalice and go to the Epistle side. Rest the chalice on the altar and pour wine, then a greater part of water, into the chalice over your fingers saying silently the Corpus tuum Domine. Return to the center of the altar, put the chalice down next to the corporal on the Epistle side, rub your fingers together over it and dry them with the purificator. ( You will no longer need to hold your thumbs and forefingers together.) Fold the purificator over your left hand and hold it against your chin. Lift the chalice with your right hand and drink the ablution, saying nothing. Replace the chalice on the altar, take the bowl in your left hand and wipe it out thoroughly with the purificator. Put the chalice near the corporal on the Gospel side, fold the purificator and lay it over the chalice, as at the beginning of Mass. The paten and pall are placed on top. With both hands, fold the corporal-starting with the fold nearest to you-and replace it in the burse. Put the chalice in the middle of the altar and cover it with the veil-which should now be on the Gospel side. The Cross is towards the front and veil is arranged with the front folds at an angle. Lay the burse on top, with the opening towards the rear. With joined hands, go to the Missal, which should now be on the Epistle side. Read aloud the Communion antiphon. Return to the center, kiss the altar and turn saying Dominus vobiscum in the usual way. Turn back the same way, go to the Missal again. Bow to the Cross, extend your hands, say aloud Oremus and rejoin hands to say aloud the Postcommunion prayers. When finished, close the Missal, with the opening towards the center of the altar. After Amen return to the center with joined hands, lay your hands flat on the altar and kiss it, turn and say Dominus vobiscum in the usual way. Without turning back to the altar after the Et cum spiritu tuo, say the Ite, Missa est. Turn back by the Epistle side, bow your head with hands joined on the altar and say the Placeat tibi. Lay hands flat on the altar, kiss it, stand up, look at the Cross, lift, extend and rejoin hands, and say Benedicat vos omnipotens Deus. On the last word, bow to the Cross, turn by the Epistle side and, with your left hand on breast, make the Sign of the Cross over the people, saying the blessing. Rejoin hands, turn for the second time by the Gospel side and go straight to the altar card at the Gospel side. Face the card, at an angle, say the Dominu vobiscum. Lay your left hand on the altar and with right thumb make the Sign of the Cross, 1st on the altar, then on your forehead, mouth and breast, saying the Initium Sancti and move your left hand to your breast. Read the last Gospel with hands joined, at the words Et Verbum caro factum est, lay your hands on the altar and genuflect. After the Deo gratias, go directly to the bottom step and kneel to say the prayers for the conversion of Russia. At the end of the prayers, go up to the altar, take the chalice by the stem in your left hand, turn it so the cross faces away from you. Lay your right hand on top of the burse, turn by the Epistle side and descend the altar steps. Turn to the altar, genuflect if Blessed Sacrament is present, other wise bow. If wearing a biretta put it on and go to the sacristy. In the sacristy, bow to the crucifix. Remove vestments and make your thanksgiving.
