Holy Spirit, Holy Family, Our Lady of Guadal at 2710 Hwy 43 N, Winfield, AL 35594 US - Praying the Rosary

Praying the Rosary

Praying the Rosary is an important part of the spiritual life of a Catholic.  It is an ancient, beautiful, and powerful prayer of devotion to God through devotion to Mary by means of a series of prayers and meditations on the life of Jesus and Mary.  It can be prayed in a group or individually; in Church, at home, in the car, and even on your computer with Virtual Rosary

Virtual Rosary is a small download that can be installed on your computer.  It reminds and helps you to pray the Rosary.  It also has special Bible verses relating to the Mysteries and will enhance the prayer experience.  You can link to Prayercast, which allows you to join in a worldwide community of people, praying for each other and for personal intentions.  You can also add your own special intentions.

The Prayers of the Rosary include:

  1. The Sign of the Cross.   In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
  2. The Apostles' Creed.   I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.  He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.  He descended to the dead.  On the third day He rose again.  He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.
  3. The Lord's Prayer.   Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy kindom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  Amen.
  4. The Hail Mary.   Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.  Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.
  5. Glory Be to the Father.   Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.
  6. Hail Holy Queen.   Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetnesss and our hope, to thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;  to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears; turn, then most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  Oh clement, Oh loving, Oh sweet Virgin Mary!   Pray for us, Oh holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

The Mysteries of the Rosary help us to reflect on the life of Christ.  There are four groups of Mysteries that are each made up of five parts of Christ's life, and as a general rule, depending on the season, are said on the different days of the week.

Mysteries of the Rosary:

  1. THE JOYFUL MYSTERIES celebrate Jesus' infancy and His hidden life in Nazareth and bring to us the joy radiating from the event of the Incarnation.  When praying the Rosary, they are said on Mondays and Saturdays, and optional on Sundays during Advent and the Christmas Season.   The five Joyful Mysteries are: the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Birth of Jesus, the Presentation of Jesus, and Finding the Child Jesus in the Temple.
  2. THE LUMINOUS MYSTERIES move to Jesus' public life.  Christ is the "Light of the world"  (John 8:12) and this truth emerges in a special way during these years.  When praying the Rosary, they are said on Thursdays.  The five Luminous Mysteries are:  The Baptism of Jesus, the Wedding at Cana, Proclaiming the Kingdom, the Transfiguration, and the Institution of the Eucharist.
  3. THE SORROWFUL MYSTERIES have great prominence in the Gospels.  They focus on the individual momemts of the Passion of Christ, and help us to realize the revelation of God's love and the source of our salvation.  When praying the Rosary, they are said on Tuesdays and Fridays, and optional on Sundays during Lent.  The five Sorrowful Mysteries are: The Agony in the Garden, The Scourging at the Pillar, The Crowning With Thorns, Carrying of the Cross, and The Crucifixion.
  4. THE GLORIOUS MYSTERIES celebrate Jesus' triumph over death.  The Rosary expresses this knowledge born of faith and invites us to pass beyond the darkness of the Passion in order to gaze upn Christ's glory in the Resurrection and Ascension.  When praying the Rosary, they are said on Wednesdays and Sundays.  The five Glorious Mysteries are:  the Resurrection, the Ascension, the Descent of the Holy Spirit, the Assumption of Mary, and the Coronation of Mary.
