The Arthritis Foundation, Michigan Chapter and the Jewish Community Center of Metro Detroit located in West Bloomfield at 6600 W. Maple Rd. 100 S. are offering the Arthritis Self-Help Course, a six week self management course to give people with arthritis the knowledge and skills they need to take a more active part in their arthritis care. Studies show that people with arthritis who have completed the course have reduced pain and fewer doctor's visits. The key subjects covered in the course are exercise, relaxation, alternative therapies, using joints wisely, medication, nutrition, coping with depression, and much more. Participants will use a textbook titled The Arthritis Handbook, which is written in easy to understand language. The course has proven to be an effective way for people with arthritis to educate and encourage each other. It is designed to complement, not replace, professional health care services.
