In October of 1882, Father Michael J. Mc Givney, curate of St. Mary's parish, in New Haven, Connecticut, met with a small group of men. The purpose in calling them together was manifold: to help Catholic men remain steadfast in their faith, promote closer ties of fraternity among them, and set up a system, so that the widows and children of members in the group who might die would not find themselves in dire financial straits. They chose "Knights of Columbus" because they felt as a Catholic group it should relate to Christopher Columbus, the Catholic discoverer of America. For over a century; the Knights have remained consistent in their goals of supporting family, faith, and fraternity. Pope John Paul II said to the Knights, "May your dedicated activity in turn help you to realize in yourselves those interior attitudes without which no one can truly evangelize: trust in the power of the Holy Spirit, true holiness of life, deep concern for truth, and an ever increasing love for all God's children." The Knights have been protecting Catholic families for generations. To find out more about the newly-formed chapter in our parish, plan to come to the Wild West Barbecue next Sunday, noon until 5:00 p.m.
