Q. What is Regina Pacis Chaplaincy?
A. Regina Pacis Chaplaincy is an apostolate of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (FSSP), dedicated to offering the Catholics of the Diocese of Lexington the sacraments and traditional devotions of the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. For more information, please see
About Us.
Q. Is Regina Pacis Chaplaincy in communion with Rome and The Holy Father?
A. Yes. The Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter and its apostolates have always been in good standing with the Holy Father. The chaplaincy was established by Bishop Ronald Gainer on Oct. 7, 2009, as a distinct entity under the authority of the Diocese of Lexington.
Q. But what's all this I hear about reunion and reconciliation talks?
A. Those regard the Society of St. Pius X, not the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. When you read or hear stories, please note carefully the difference between "FSSPX" (or "SSPX"), which mean the Society of St. Pius X, and "FSSP", which means the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. The FSSP is under the Ecclesia Dei Commission in Rome and is not affiliated with the SSPX.
Q. So the Latin Mass group in Lexington is not schismatic?
A. No, and it never has been.
Q. Is Regina Pacis Chaplaincy part of the Diocese of Lexington?
A. Yes. All of the ministry carried out through the Chaplaincy is done in accordance with faculties and permissions given by Bishop Gainer and the Diocese of Lexington.
Q. Is Regina Pacis Chaplaincy looking for a church of its own?
A. Yes, with the written consent of Bishop Gainer. We are following all of the instructions and directives received from the Diocese in regard to this project.
Q. Why is Regina Pacis looking for a place of its own?
A. There are a number of reasons. The main ones are that the FSSP wants the apostolate to be large enough to sustain two priests, as Fraternity priests should be living in community, and that the current schedule and arrangements show a need for a place of our own.
Q. How much money will the Diocese contribute for this?
A. None. The Chaplaincy is seeking its own sources of funding while honoring the instructions received from the Diocese. For more information, or if you would like to contribute to this effort, please see question
"Where are you" below.
Q. If Regina Pacis Chaplaincy gets a church of its own, where will its congregation come from?
A. While this answer may seem somewhat obvious, it is "from those who wish to come." We have no intention to recruit from the existing parishes in town. We do know that some people would like to come but find our current circumstances too difficult for them to come on a regular basis. We would also very much like to reach out to Catholics who have fallen away or are not attending church as regularly as they should.
Q. If Regina Pacis Chaplaincy gets a place of its own, will it try to have a school, seminary, shrine, or something like that?
A. The current scope, in accordance with the permissions received, is to get a place of our own. Any further issues along the lines of the question would have to be addressed afterwards. One should bear in mind the difference between plans under consideration (to get our own place) and possibilities (everything else). In particular, the pledges and donations we are seeking are only for the costs associated with getting a place of our own.
Q. When is Mass?
A. Sunday at 4 pm, Mon - Fri at 7 am, Sat at 8 am. There is also a 2nd Mass on Friday, at 9:30 am. For the full schedule, click
here.
Q. Where are you?
All Masses (and Masses ONLY) are at St. Peter Church, 153 Barr St., Lexington, KY. This is downtown near the intersection of Martin Luther King and Barr St., and across from Sayre School.
All communication should be directed to Fr. James Gordon, 177 St. Ann Dr. Lexington, KY 40502 (859) 268-5159. This is in the general area of Richmond Rd. and New Circle Drive.
Q. Do you have Mass only in Latin, or is there also Mass in English?
A. Regina Pacis Chaplaincy offers only the Traditional Latin Mass, also
called the Tridentine Mass or the Extraordinary Form, according to the books in force at the end of 1962. Sermons are, of course, in English.
For Masses in English, please see the website for
St. Peter Parish.
