Catholic Leadership Alive: Skills for the FAQ’s for Parents/Guardians What is Catholic Leadership Alive? Catholic Leadership Alive is a three day gathering of parish/school teams that desire to develop and/or deepen the skills needed for Christian Leadership in their parishes, schools, communities and personal lives. The program is sponsored by the Diocese of Orlando and has been developed by local Catholic Youth Ministry Leaders. What are the primary goals of CLA? The goals of the CLA experience include: Ø Empowering youth with the skills necessary to be Christian leaders. Ø Helping youth reflects on the gifts they already bring to leadership. Ø Helping youth place leadership within the context of Christian values, morality and community. Ø Assisting parish/school teams in the development of an actual program planned, developed and implemented by your participating youth and adults. What are some of the topics and themes that are explored? Working in “family” groups guided by one or two adult leaders, the young people will have the opportunity to grow in their understanding of: Ø Leadership that is rooted in moral values and the Christian faith. Ø Theology that explores the meaning of Jesus Christ as the model of leadership, the Church as the Spirit-filled community that calls forth and nourishes leadership, and the young person as invited by God to share in the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ. Ø Skills necessary for effective leadership in the parish, school and wider communities, including communication skills, group facilitation and program planning skills. What is the make up of a parish/school team? A parish/school team consists of 4-6 young people and 2 adults. Youth should be 15-18 years old and ready to grow (not necessarily already leaders). Adults must be 23+ years old, have been cleared for ministry with youth by the diocese and have had prior experience in the supervision of high school aged youth in overnight programs. What is expected of the youth participants? Ø Participating actively in all the sessions Ø Learning and developing/practicing leadership skills Ø Learning from members of other parish/school communities Ø Planning and implementing a program based on the skills learned Ø Becoming involved in leadership within the parish/school/community Ø Compliance with the CLA Code of Conduct Ø Attending follow-up meetings with their planning groups What do participants do on the CLA?
