5th Grade Science:
Textbook: Each student was told they could keep their TB at home for the year since I have enough copies to use in the classroom. Much of the curriculum is not in the book, so I use a lot of my own materials from various resources. Students will need to keep good notes, organized in their notebook, as well as keeping all handouts in their Science part of the expandable file. DO NOT throw any papers away unless they have tested on it.
Teaching Style/Learning Style: I believe students learn from a variety of methods and so I try to vary what I do from unit to unit. We do many hands on investigations, experiments and observations. I also give notes for each unit and post them on my website as the test date approaches. A study guide is given for each unit, also.
Tests: There will be a written test for each unit. Students need to study 2-3 nights before the test to be fully prepared. I also give informal assessments with their labs and investigations to make sure they understand the main ideas. Sometimes I may have parents sign a test. Since grades are online though, I don’t do this all the time.
Projects: Each quarter there will be a project. Each quarter the project is different. This quarter the project will be on OHIO Amphibians. That material will be coming home later in the quarter.
Homework: They will have homework about 1-2 times per week. If the homework is late they still need to turn it in, but they will receive a LUNCH Detention from me. This means that on the designated day (usually Friday) they will still go out to recess, but they have to eat lunch in my classroom in silence and complete boredom. They will not be allowed to read or do any work at this time.
Demerits: If a student receives 3 teacher detentions from me in a quarter he/she will get a School Demerit for being unprepared for class. Please see the Handbook for how demerits are handled.
Field Trips: We go on several field trips throughout the year. Students will need a permission slips for all of them. If a student does not behave appropriately in the classroom he/she will no be allowed on the next field trip. It is very important to me that St. Albert is represented well in our community. Glen Helen is in Feb. 16-19. It is an overnight program full of learning, group skills and fun. If your son/daughter has not been away from home much you may want to start doing some overnights to prepare them. We take very good care of them. Our 5th grade last year had a wonderful time and I expect the same this year. I will have a detailed parent meeting and packet about this trip in January. We are also going to the Victoria Theater in April.
Guest speakers: I like to invite professionals from our community to come and speak with the students on our curriculum topics.
Curriculum Topics:
1. Air Quality (Pollution)
2. Amphibians
3. Matter (Intro to Chemistry)
4. Electricity
5. Sound
6. Astronomy
7. Meteorology
8. Health: Healthy eating, fitness, drug abuse prevention, smoking, refusal skills, bodily privacy and respect!
Website: Check it often. I keep notes and great links to related materials. Girls: I keep the Girls In STEMM updates on my site, too! Boys: I have fun links for you to explore!
Having stated all this, I do look forward to helping your child understand science a little better and helping them see that science is for everyone! It’s all around us and God is Amazing!
