6th Grade LIFE Science
Curriculum: (not necessarily in this order)
1. Endangered Species
2. Mammals
3. Cell Theory
4. Plant Life
5. Intro to Genetics
6. Health: review body systems and cover these new ones: Excretory, Endocrine, and Immune, refusal skills, bodily privacy and respect.
Textbook: We will follow the book pretty closely. Each student was given permission to keep their book at home since I have enough classroom copies for them to share when needed. If they bring them to school they need be covered.
Teaching Style/Learning Style: I believe students learn from a variety of methods and so I try to vary what I do from unit to unit. We do many hands on investigations, experiments and observations. I also give notes for each unit. I will NOT keep notes on my website for 6th graders since so much of the material can be found in the textbook. A study guide is given for each unit, also, and that WILL be on my website.
Projects: The major project this year will be Science Fair. Students will receive a timeline and a “How To” guide for Science Fair. I will be available for extra consultation if necessary. Science Fair is Feb. 2nd, and so most of the work will be due in January. Students can start thinking now about what they are interested in.
Homework: I will give homework 2-3 times a week, most of it reading and questions from the book. If they do not have homework the day it is due it is a 0. I will not accept late work. The student will also be given a Teacher Detention to be served during lunch (not recess this year), usually on Fridays. If a student receives 3 teacher detentions in one quarter they will be given a school Demerit for not prepared for class.
Field Trips: I’d like to take the 6th grade to the Cincy Zoo in the spring. They have some great programs focused on Life Science. We may go to the Boonshoft or have them visit us since they also have some great programs involving Life Science. If a student does not behave appropriately in the classroom he/she will no be allowed on the next field trip. It is very important to me that St. Albert is represented well in our community.
Website: Check for review lists and any classroom updates!
Having stated all this, I do look forward to helping your child understand science a little better and helping them see that science is for everyone! It’s all around us and God is Amazing!
