Sacred Heart Parish was established on June 5, 1895. On August 8, 1927 the cornerstone to this beautiful Italian Romanesque church, designed by Kraus and Helmkamp of Akron, was set. the Most Rev. James J. Hartley, D.D. formally dedicated the church on July 15, 1928. After the Second Vatican Council had convened in Rome in 1962 far-reaching changes in the church began to filter down. The celebrant at the Mass no longer had his back to the people, but faced them. To accommodate this change the most elaborate work of art throughout the church now appeared. A white swirled marble altar was installed to face the congregation, and a large mosaic of the Sacred Heart of Jesus flanked by the same marble filled the center real wall of the sanctuary. Liskowiak Studios completed the mosaic, imported from Italy, on January 10, 1967. In looking forward to the 100th anniversary of the church in 1995, the church went through a two-part renovation. The exterior was cleaned and a new copper roof installed, along with a complete restoration of the interior. We, the parish of Sacred Heart, are proud of our church and welcome pilgrims and visitors of all faiths.
