Christ the King

From the Desk of the Pastor
Like to Sing? Join the Choir! The Choir is always happy to have new members (even if only for the Christmas season).  Practices will continue on Wednesdays from 7-9 at church.  No music reading skills are necessary, just a desire to sing and praise the Lord! Music is such an important and integral part of our worship

Parish Offertory Program: This is the third year of a five-year program of stewardship. Some parishioners have not yet completed their Offertory Commitment Cards. Commitment cards will remain in the vestibule of the Church for the next few weeks. Also, we will begin our mail and other follow-up efforts in about a week. The Parish Offertory Program
brochure is posted on the parish website. Thank you for your generous support of your Church community.

RCIA. This week we celebrate the Rite of Acceptance for the Catechumen. Catechumens are those who are not baptized but seek it and the other sacraments of initiation into full communion of our Catholic community. Once accepted into the Order of Catechumen, the Church embraces them as her own because they are now joined to the Church. They look to us as a community to help nourish them with the Word of God and our worship. Keep them in your prayers.

Forming Good Stewards: Jesus says to Pilate: “My Kingdom does not belong to this world.”  Our Lord’s response raises an important question for us who calim to be his followers: where is our kingdom? Is it our home? Our Family? Our job or profession? Material wealth or financial security?  Is it a combination or all or some of these? All of thes things are good; and in a sense we have to have them. God wants us to have, enjoy and USE them for ourselves and others. It is when one or more of these things become our kingdom, to the exclusion of or diminishment of the Kingdom of which Jesus speaks and came to inaugurate.

I heard a Pastor (of another parish) say to a group of Catholic School Parents: “If you are sending them to School and not bringing them to Church, you’re wasting your money.” It was certainly a blunt observation! The Vatican’s Congregation for Catholic Education says that Catholic Schools do not exist for themselves nor for their own self-perpetuation. They exist as ministries of the Church and participate in the overall evangelizing mission of the Church.  Our parish greatly benefits from having a parish school. It is deeply rooted in the life of St. Anthony Parish and is an essential part of the overall pastoral task of handing on the faith. Send them to our School!! Bring them to Church!

“My kingdom does not belong to this world,” Jesus tells Pilate in today’s Gospel. Yet today we honor him as universal king, holding dominion of all creation. Yes, Christ’s kingdom is not of this world. It is not land and property, or castles and wealth. As the Mass prayers state, his is “a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love, and peace.” That is the kingdom of which we are citizens by virtue of our baptism. And that is the kingdom we work to bring others to. Jesus told Pilate that his attendants would fight to prevent him from being handed over if his kingdom were of this world. We don’t engage in that kind of warfare. But we do work with all our hearts to bring others to Christ so that his reign may extend to every nation.
