While St. Matthew Catholic Church has only been a parish since June 24, 1999, St. Matthew has a long, rich past.
1964 The Archdiocese of Atlanta purchased the Matthew Public School building for the purpose of a mission church.
1965 The building was dedicated by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph L. Bernardin. The mission church was originally part of the Parish of St. Joseph’s in Athens. 1972 St. Matthew's was reassigned to St. Anna’s Church in Monroe. Major remodeling and repairs were begun in the 70’s and continued through the 80’s and 90’s. 1991 The mission was reassigned to St. Oliver Plunkett in Snellville. Major renovations to the sanctuary included the stained glass windows in the sanctuary which were hand crafted by the monks at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers. 1992 The social hall and classrooms were completed. 1997 A religious education building was added. Over the years, several priests have served the community of St. Matthew’s. Father John Mulroy was the first priest to serve the nine families that started the new mission church. After him, priests that served the mission church included Fathers Harrison, Scherer, Burke, Gracz, Horan, Tony Curran, Mike Hogan, Ed Danneker, John P. Kelley, John Henley, and Thomas Carroll. BECAME TERRITORIAL CHURCH: June 24, 1999 The mission was installed as a full territorial church and Father Victor Reyes was selected as the founding pastor and served until the fall of 2000. Father Guyma Noel served St. Matthew’s from the fall of 2000 until January of 2001 at which time our current pastor, Father Jaime Barona, came to serve the now more than 600 families of St. Matthew’s. CONSTRUCTION: 2006 Began construction of new Sanctuary and offices. DEDICATION OF NEW CHURCH: September the 22, 2007 Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory dedicated our new church. The ceremony was a beautiful once-in-a-lifetime experience. Archbishop Gregory Dedication September 22, 2007 Our Mission is to continue building the Kingdom of God in the living tradition of the Catholic faith by witnessing the presence and the life of Christ in the Eucharist and sacramental community, by worship, prayer, service and evangelization. "As for me and my household, we will serve the lord" Joshua 24:15
