When our thoughts are fixed on God, when we reflect on His greatness, when we experience His power in our lives, gratitude wells up naturally in our hearts. Who among us can outdo God in generosity? Consider His goodness more than His justice. Then, we will find it very easy to love and serve Him.
A confirmation of this love, and the desire to see His name honored and glorified, is the church of San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila built in a span of three years. When we embarked on this virtuous project of building the church, it was deemed as a task – an awareness of God’s being holy yet merciful, being unreachable yet knowable, an acknowledgment of the healing and wholeness that He brings. Sacrifices and renunciations had to accompany the efforts, and with the unstinting benefactors and grateful parishioners the struggle for the fulfillment of a dreamt church held firm.
That was three years ago. Today, the dream is a reality. As the Bible puts it: “There’s an appointed time for every affair, under the heavens … a time to tear down, and a time to build, a time to weep, and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance”. (Ecc 3:1, 3f)
Today is a time for us to “laugh” and “dance” in thanksgiving to the Lord, to one another and to all those who helped us build our church – our benefactors sponsors, donors, friends, constructors, suppliers and workers. We overflow with gratitude and joy for this dream come true. At the same time, we earnestly beg the Lord to be faithful to our Parish’s Vision and Mission of “translating” His word, His Goodness, and His Love, through the witness of life we give day by day. The people of San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish count their innumerable blessings as they look back in the past.
