Middle School Newsletter
December 2011
Dear Parents,
Thanks for all of the little extras that so many of you do. I’m also pleased with how informative conferences were. It’s important to work together for the success of our students and school.
The sixth grade is just beginning to compare what they are learning in the Book of Exodus with the movie The Prince of Egypt. This is a great opportunity to build reading comprehension skills. In social studies they are wrapping up their first research project on a nation in Europe. They have done a great job so far.
The seventh grade has done a great job so far with religion. We will begin a unit on the Mass soon, which I’ll use as an opportunity to further their understanding of the changes with the third edition of The Roman Missal. In history, we’re still covering events leading up to the formation of the nation. They have done a great job so far; some have really excelled!
The eighth grade has been learning a lot about the Catholic faith. The students have been balancing content for Confirmation, Family Life (including Virtus), and Church History. They have also done some work to prepare for the upcoming language changes in the Mass this Advent. The detail the students are working with in history has been a challenge, but student performance has been better after kind of a rough start. We’ve been working on vocabulary at a reduced pace in order to practice the format for the upcoming Spelling Bee.
I made an error on the fundraising spreadsheet for eighth grade, which made it appear that some students had raised more money than they actually had. I spoke to the students about this already (and apologized because I feel terrible about it), but I’m putting current totals with this newsletter.
Speaking of fundraising, don’t forget to pick up your auction tickets at the parish or school office. Some people seem to think this is an event for big spendersonly, but everyone should come and have some fun. My family enjoys it every year!
As always, if you have questions, please let me know. God bless.
Sincerely,
Tim Walsh
