KINDERGARTEN Play clothes must be worn so that your child can participate and play throughout the school day. Save the special dress clothes for special family or school dress up days. Tennis shoes or school shoes with socks must be worn. No light-up or musical shoes. NO sandals or backless shoes for safety reasons. Please watch the height of heels. Shoe boots may not be worn because they are too warm. Otherwise, students will be asked to remove them and leave them at home. Tattoos: neither permanent nor temporary tattoos are permitted Hair: neat, clean, styled; no fad cuts; no inappropriate colors; hair should not cover the eyes and/or eyebrows; hair accessories should be neutral or match the uniform and should not detract from the uniform look Make-up: no make-up, including eye make-up, nail polish, artificial nails, or nail tips are to be worn by girls in grades K - 6; girls in grades 7 - 8 may wear clear nail polish, flesh-tone foundation; light blush; light or clear lip gloss; girls in grades 7 - 8 may not wear eye make-up, artificial nails or nail tips. Principal or 7th or 8th grade teachers may revoke these 7th and 8th grade make-up privileges if they are abused. The khaki slacks and shorts must be Schoolbelles, Dockers, Lands End, or French Toast brands and must be worn with a solid black, navy, or brown belt. If a t-shirt is worn under the polo, it must be white and tucked in. GYM CLOTHES - GRADES 1 - 8 Shirt: yellow or navy blue SJS gym shirt; 8th graders design their own gym shirt; gym shirts are ordered at the beginning of the school year Shorts: navy, gray, or SJS gym shorts which may be ordered at the beginning of the school year; must be of an appropriate length as determined by the physical education teacher or the principal Sweatpants: navy, gray, or SJS sweatpants which may be ordered at the beginning of the school year; must be worn when leaving school November through April if time does not allow students to change back into their school uniforms Shoes: athletic shoes Socks: white or navy socks visible above the shoe Not permitted: jean shorts, pajama-type pants CHURCH/MASS DRESS CODE - GRADES K - 8 Students must be in uniform and may wear a coat or jacket without words, logos, pictures, or symbols, or they may wear an SJS sweatshirt in cold weather. Any other type of outer wear must be removed once the students are in the church. DRESS UP DAYS - GRADES K - 8 Dress up days require clothing that is more formal than the school uniform. Clothes should be appropriate for a Catholic student. Students may not wear shorts, jeans, tank tops, thin-strap tops, strapless tops, halter tops, midriff tops, or shirts with words on them. Girls’ skirts and dresses may not be shorter than 2 inches above the knee. Girls’ shoes should be appropriate and comfortable enough to wear for the entire school day. For safety reasons, students are not allowed to remove shoes and walk barefoot. DRESS DOWN DAYS - GRADES K - 8 As determined by the principal or at the request of the classroom teacher, students may wear appropriate comfortable clothing in good condition and suitable for the weather. Boys and girls must wear pants, jeans, or shorts which fit appropriately for a Catholic school student. Pants, jeans, and shorts may not be too baggy, too big, too short, or too tight. Tank tops, thin-strap tops, strapless tops, midriff tops, or halter tops may not be worn. The midriff area may not be bare. Shirts with inappropriate or vulgar words or objects may not be worn. Clothing advertising or promoting drugs, cigarettes, beer, alcohol, violence, or anti-Christian themes or people may not be worn. IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE The Pastor and/or Principal reserve the right to review, assess, and amend the dress code at any time during the year, if it is in the best interest of our students or our school, or if the students need firmer dress code guidelines. All students must leave the school building in the required school uniform unless time restrictions do not allow them adequate time to change. Permission to leave the building out of uniform must be granted by the principal or the teacher(s). DRESS CODE VIOLATIONS - BOYS & GIRLS - GRADES 2 - 8 Consequences for dress code infractions are as follows: The 1st infraction: The infraction is recorded in the school office and the parent(s) are sent a notification form requiring the parent signature. The 2nd infraction: The infraction is recorded in the school office, the parent(s) are sent a notification form requiring the parent signature, and a phone call is made to the parent(s). The 3rd and each following infraction: The infraction is recorded in the school office, the parent(s) are called, and when possible, depending on the nature of the infraction, the student will remain in the school office until the correct clothing is brought to the school. The student will also serve a 30-minute after-school detention the following week with the principal. Parents: please provide supervision and guidance, especially for the younger students, to make sure your child/children follow the dress code. Additional consequences for students in grades 5 - 8: Any infraction after the third will result in the student attending a two-hour Saturday morning school session. There will be one Saturday morning session every month, except for December and April. The session will be supervised by either the principal or a teacher of the 5th - 8th grade students. Students are to bring enough school work for the entire two hours. Saturday morning sessions will be for dress code violations, repeated discipline problems, and/or excessive tardiness.
