ENRICHMENT
Band concerts, art shows, & science fairs give students a showcase for their talents. National programs such as the Jason Project, the Stock Market Game, Junior Great Books, Young Authors, and Newspapers in Education augment our course of study. Guest speakers and performers range from bluegrass bands to scientists from NASA. Field trips take our students to science camp, archaeological digs, zoos, science & art museums, live theater performances, historical villages, Washington D.C., and national landmarks. National & international commemorations bring students together to celebrate International Peace Day, Constitution Day, and a variety of patriotic and holy days.
Students are encouraged to think beyond their school community by offering their service in programs at migrant meal centers, homeless shelters, local nursing homes, & in classroom drives to collect food and toys during the holidays. Each class also completes a special project, such as a cleanup day in a metro park, partnering with inner-city schools, and sending packages to our military in Iraq and an orphanage in El Salvador.
LIBRARY The SJS Library welcomes students with rocking chairs, floor pillows, and study tables. It has over 7,000 books, including picture books, easy readers, general fiction, biography and nonfiction. We also subscribe to 7 magazines and have 120 sets of books for reading classes and our Book Clubs. Our Accelerated Reader computerized testing program has over 2,300 tests.
MISSION STATEMENT
HISTORY
Our parish school was established in1883, with new facilities built in 1924 and 1956 and extensive remodeling in 2006. Beginning in 2007 St. Joseph Parish was included in a cluster of parishes that includes the villages of Amherst, South Amherst, Oberlin and Wellington. We welcome students from all these areas.
