St. Joseph's Parish is located in Savanna-la-Mar (Plain by the Sea) and has a population of approximately 16,340 (1991). The main throughfare is Great George Street, a mile-long road lined with shops, churches, businesses, and public buildings.
Savanna-la-mar, 33 miles from Montego Bay, is the chief town of Westmoreland Parish which was formed in 1730. About a quarter of the parish consists of the alluvial plains which have always been the principal area of sugar cultivation, and next to sugar its most important industry is cattle-raising, both dairy products and beef.
St. Joseph’s Parish sits off the main drag and includes a large church, parish hall, cemetery, friary and a soccer field. The Sunday Mass at St. Joseph’s has some 150 people attending. The parish is blessed by the presence of lay leaders and active parisioners.
Father Joe Hund, O.F.M., came to Jamaica in October 2002, serving as pastor of St. Joseph's since October 2003. The parish is actively building a strong lay leadership team through the forming of small Christian communities at St. Joseph’s and at the three affiliated mission churches. Above picture of Fr.
