St. Peter Claver Parish at 1203 North Nebraska Avenue, Tampa, FL 33602 US - Liturgical Ministries

Liturgical Ministries

ALTAR SERVERS

This ministry enables young people to participate in the holy service of the Church by assisting the priest at the altar during the Mass and at other liturgies and special celebrations. This ministry is open to boys and girls who are registered members and have received First Communion. Altar Server training is required and periodically provided in the parish.

ART & ENVIRONMENT

The Art & Environment team maintains the worship environment of the interior and exterior of the church as the liturgical seasons dictate. This involves maintaining and changing the altar linens, decorating and floral arrangements, maintaining inventories of candles and votives, and other needed items. They are also called upon to help decorate the sanctuary throughout the year for various liturgical functions other activities. Their responsibility also extends to some exterior parts of the church.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION (EMHC)

Extraordinary Ministers assist with distribution of Holy Communion during the Liturgy. They may also take Communion to the sick and those who are confined at home, in the hospital, or nursing home. EMHCs are required to attend training sponsored by the Diocese. Training is also provided by the parish. After completion of the parish training, Extraordinary Ministers are commissioned by the Pastor to serve within the parish.

HOSPITALITY MINISTERS (GREETERS AND USHERS)

Greeters and Ushers help parishioners and visitors feel welcomed and comfortable before, during and after liturgical services. Hospitality Ministers direct seating, assist with the collection of the gifts of the assembly during the Liturgy, distribute bulletins or other information, and help maintain the general order of the worship space. Participation is open to all men and women of the parish. Youth are selected to serve on designated days.

MASS CHOIR

The Mass Choir consists of adults who are committed to spirit-filled praise and worship and who strive to enhance the congregation’s participation in the liturgy by providing appropriate hymns and music that support the Scripture readings and liturgical theme of the Mass.  The choir sings both contemporary and traditional Christian music with an emphasis on the African-American gospel style. The choir participates in other liturgical events and activities throughout diocese, as well as ecumenical and civic events. The Choir is open to all registered and active parishioners, age 18 and older.

READERS AND COMMENTATORS

These Ministers of the Word proclaim the readings and prayers of the faithful during the Liturgy on Sundays and weekdays. Because communicating the sacred word is a special responsibility, Readers must spend significant time preparing and be available to read on scheduled days. The ministry is open to adults and youth who have received their First Communion. Each person must attend a workshop sponsored by the Diocese of St. Petersburg Office of Worship and training provided within the parish to be commissioned to serve in the parish.

SACRISTAN COMMISSION

The Sacristans oversee the care and maintenance of altar linens, vestments, and sacred vessels used at Mass or other liturgical functions and services. The sacristans also take care of the set up for all religious services and functions and make sure items are stored properly. They also make sure the sanctuary and surrounding areas are properly maintained.  The Sacristan Commission works in conjunction with the Art & Environment Team.
