A Word From

Our Parish Director

Today's readings are among the most challenging in all of scripture for us to hear. The first reading in particular has Moses speaking to the Israelites and to us concerning the fact that we no longer have the excuse of ignorance. We know what God wants of us; we know what the relationship with God is to look like.

In the Gospel, Jesus features the Samaritan as the neighbor. The marvelous quality that the Samaritan possesses is that he has the ability to feel what the man on the side of the road is experiencing. He cares. That's the heart of Christianity - to care for what happens to every brother and every sister. It's interesting when you look up the word "care" in the dictionary. We might think it has something to do with taking care of the needs of someone. The definition of "to care" is "being in emotional pain, understanding someone else's pain." A person who cares has this basic quality found in the heart of every human being. Mysteriously, what makes us happy is working through our struggles and pains with those people who are around us. We end up being an ingredient of help for others, which in turn brings us a sense of peace and feeling of value. Our challenge is to open our hearts to what Christ is calling us to be. The most exciting facet of Christianity for me is that this process always brings me back to something that is more natural than what I could create for myself. I become more truly what I want to be. God gives us this gift freely, a gift that we call a fuller, richer life.
