The PTO Board meets at 7:00 p.m. on the second Monday of the month in the Renewel Center. All are welcome to come. The minutes from the last meeting are below.
November 10, 2008 St. Albert the Great PTO Meeting Minutes
Present: Cathy Simon, Melanie Price, Theresa Stumpf, Laura Gruhl, Mike Kirry, Lisa Collins, Sandy McGuire, Bill Keller, Tony Witt, Holly Molnar, Laynae Meyer, Sean Roush, Dave Schwager
Opening Prayer: Melanie did for Katie; Katie Overton will do in January
PTO Corner: Katie would like the names of teachers volunteering for the tree sales; need to have items to Katie by Thursday morning each week.
Minutes: October minutes unanimously approved
Treasurer’s Report: Tony Witt reported; see separate report. Total cash and CD’s on hand $40,702.72. Report unanimously approved.
Education Commission: This month’s meeting occurs on Thursday – Dave Schwager will attend. December meeting will likely be a party – Melanie will go if they have a meeting.
School Report:
Mr. Kirry reported:
- Exit survey sent to about 40 families who left the school after last year – 13 returned and results being tabulated. No big surprises so far.
- As a result of the above surveys and the school community meetings decided to implement a quarterly survey for current families. It will entail a rating system with room for comments.
- STEM pilot program likely to begin in 2009 at CJ for Jr. High level students.
- Writing samples 7th grade – proficiency testing to begin next Monday (5th and 3rd to begin later in the year).
- Pat Greger received a McDonald’s McGrant for hands-on classroom activities.
- On-line grade viewing will being 11/20; letters sent home to families during conferences.
- Girls in Science ongoing.
- Glen Helen went very well and teachers are willing to do it again. Glen Helen is offering dates for 6th grade in spring at discounted rates; being considered.
- Mrs. Minham and the Pre-school passed state inspection with no violations.
- Tomorrow 8th grade field trip to Freedom Center and 4th grade to Philharmonic.
- Confirmation enrollment this Sunday at 11am mass.
- St Albert School registration/admission policy is drawn up and will be presented at the education commission meeting this Thursday (dates, steps for admission for new families, etc).
- Question regarding recycling project for school service project and Cub Scout recycling program. Mr. Kirry will look into it to be sure a conflict does not exist.
- Question about full day kindergarten priority policy – expect high demand. Working on policy to address this.
Committee Reports
Christmas Tree Sales: Sean and Sandy reported. The committee met and ironed out lot set-up and tree delivery process. Delivery day is 11/22; people will be assigned to various groups to organize the tasks. Bring scissors for cutting strings off trees. Getting new trailer this year; heaters, fire pit, hot chocolate will all be present. Keys will be given out at tree delivery – keys from last year may work. Bill Keller reported that the Cub Scouts would like to carol at the tree lot 12/18/08. Sean agreed that this would be fine. We will have wreaths and roping again this year.
Parents Night Out: Jennifer reported; the forms went home in this week’s packets. It has also been in the bulletin and RE students got them as well. Jennifer is having trouble getting student volunteers – have 5-6 adults but only one student volunteer right now. Still working on getting more student volunteers. Theresa offered the babysitter list from the baptismal baskets. Melanie will ask Jean Carr if we can use the TV/DVD for that evening. Dave reported that he will come with Santa that evening – he requires payment that night and Tony provided Dave with a check for Santa.
Kids Art Note Cards: Laura reported; 46 families participated and total profit is $305.00.
Catholic Schools Week Luncheon: Melanie reported. She will speak with Mrs. Hankey about the possibility of using Brio again. Discussed gifts – using gift cards and maybe a few gift baskets to raffle off. Holly volunteered to help with coordinating the food or the gifts. Will do teacher subs as well.
Monday Packets: Melanie has been doing them; she is looking for volunteers to help.
Magazine Drive: Jennifer reported. 2007 profit $18188 and 2008 profit $14461 (difference of about $3700).
Teen Dance: Sandy reported; the date has been changed to 12/05/08.
Scrip: Cathy reported; profit so far $143.79 for Meijer; $651.82 for Kroger and $163.00 on the other cards this year to date. Cathy will be getting with Holly to get her trained to take over the program.
Market Day: Theresa reported; great sale last month $543 and 60 customers. Parent Alice Banks helped sell at work which was appreciated. Karen Brown helped make reminder phone calls and will continue each month. Next sale is December 4th. Jennifer is going to help and learn to take over.
Skating Parties: Bill reported; this week is the next one – will put on announcements.
Directory: Cathy reported. $10.76 profit this year; ordered 75 less. Consider adding to RE fee next year so all RE students get a directory. Consider pricing with other parishioner printers next year.
Monthly Teacher’s Meeting: Melanie reported that it is going well. Mr. Kirry reported that it is going well.
Website: Sean reported; no updates.
Baptismal Baskets: Theresa reported; does not need material yet. Mrs. Armstrong is willing to work on more blankets with students as a service project. Mr. Alig’s class is going to sort the paperwork for the folders as a service project. She put something in the bulletin about needing blankets – got calls and drop-offs of blankets.
Halloween Party: Theresa reported; 65-70 people showed up. Ended up making about $77 on the event.
New business/discussion:
Michael Spangler - follow up on Eagle Scout table project. The teachers love them. PowerPoint presentation shared with the group; Melanie will email it out.
Ident-A-Kid: Went out in the packets today; no work on the part of the PTO.
Babysitting and Home Alone Classes: Melanie reported; company offering these classes after school as an optional program for students. 4th grade and up for home alone. Two 2-hour classes. Babysitting class for 6th-8th graders – 4 sessions involved in January through February. Handouts will go home. No fee for the school to host the program.
Funding Requests:
Melanie will call Rose Waggenspeck regarding Math Counts program (at one point a request was in the box but it seems to be missing). Will do email vote once specifics are in.
Judy Drake requests funding for the Dayton Philharmonic Program at $165.00. Unanimously approved.
