St. Anthony School at 4609 Saint Anthony Rd, Temperance, MI 48182 US - School History

School History

St. Anthony School began classes on September 18, 1944 with 95 students and two Sisters of Mercy teachers. Classes were held in the church basement while the school building was being built. On March 26, 1945, classes were held in the new school building.  There were three classes with 1st and 2nd grades in one room, 3rd, 4th and 5th in another, while 6th, 7th and 8th were in the third. In 1959, the new addition, referred to as the “upper wing,” was completed and each class had its own classroom.

In 1970, Kenna Hall was completed and physical education classes were held there and still are to this day.

In the spring of 1973, the Sisters of Mercy announced they would no longer staff St. Anthony School. With the beginning of the new school year in 1973, the Sisters of Notre Dame sent three Sisters to St. Anthony’s. Two new school offices were added that year too.

Our Kindergarten classes began in 1974, and in 1993 our Latchkey program was started.

Currently we offer classes from Preschool to grade 8. Our staff includes two Sisters of Notre Dame and one Sylvania Franciscan Sister.
