| Background and History |
THE ROAD TO CALVARY This powerful drama was written by well known playwright Brian Griffiths in 1986, since then it has gone from a small production performed in the local church hall in Ystradgynlais, into one of the most talked of theatrical events outside the professional theatre. Between ten and twelve perfomances are given each year during Lent, in venues ranging from cathedrals to small valley chapels. The play is an exciting interpretation of a traditional passion play: using the latest theatrical techniques in sound, lighting, make up, costumes and audience involvement. The thirty actors and ten back stage staff are nearly all from the small parish of St. Benedicts, Clydach in the Swansea Valley. Each year after the final perfomance a small production group begin preparing for the following year. Everything is looked at, the script, cast, music and venues. It is the attention to detail and the continual striving for improvement that enables the play to appear fresh every year. As the drama unfolds it depicts the Passion of Christ in a moving and compelling way. The events leading up to the crucifixion are explored in depth, exposing an intricate web of lies and deceit woven by Jews and Romans alike. Beneath the political wrangling and intrigue runs an undercurrent of violence, which culminates in the mob calling for the release of Barrabas and the death of Jesus. The Road to Calvary is a wonderful preparation for Easter, bringing us closer to the truths contained in St. John's Gospel and telling a familiar story in a fresh and exciting way.
