Our Eco School work

These extracts are from an article provided by Teacher Elizabeth Rowden and her Eco-Team.

Nature Reserve Garden

We have a lovely nature garden area set at the back of our Early Years block.  Our Parish community at St Benedict's Church and our School donated tools and plants for this garden. The garden was the idea of the late Mr. Peter James, whose wife teaches at the school. He left beautiful plans for a wildlife garden which we have worked hard to develop.

Our Eco-Committeee members have met with Justin from "Frog", a design consultancy firm based in Llanelli, to develop our wildlife garden area further. The Eco-Committee canvassed all pupils in our school and noted their ideas and recorded these to share with Justin and the design team from "Frog" (www.frogstuff.co.uk). We are applying for grants to support us with our green work and to enhance our environment further. To date we have developed our green areas through kind donations through School and Parish.

Eco Club Activities: In our Eco Club we work in team groups.  We have a bird feeder team which makes fat bird cakes and tops up the bird feeders regularly. We have a fruit tuck shop team (Yum! Yum!) and a compost team (Yeuch!!!). We also have a pond check team and a poster design group. Each term an Eco-Newsletter is produced for each pupil in the school. We are all working on litter, saving electricity and water at our school. We meet upevery Monday and Tuesday lunch hours for half an hour.

Donations

We have had some wonderful donations of garden items for our nature reserve area. A lovely bench and bird table, a tree from parents of Early Years children, two small greenhouses and bulbs from Father Teyrnon, for spring colour in the school.

If you wish to donate any garden items to the school please contact:

Mrs Elizabeth Rowden at St. Joseph's school, Clydach.

Finally, we are really enjoying our Eco work at St Joseph's and are striving to attain a green flag award soon.  We are really trying to develop our school and make it more attractive for us all to share and enjoy.

Many thanks go to all the teachers, children, parents and friends who are continually supporting our endeavours so far.
