Learn More About Us

St. Bernadette of Lourdes in Stanton, MI was originally called St. Apollonia and was established as a mission in 1879. The land for the original church was purchased for $100.00 and there were 15 to 25 families.  Since St. Apollonia church was too small, in 1962, four acres of land one block east of M-66 was purchased for $2,500.00. In the Spring of 1963, the church was completed and dedicated. It would seat 280 people. The name of the mission was changed to St. Bernadette of Lourdes.

In 1974, Bishop Breittenbeck changed the status of St. Bernadette of  Lourdes from a mission  to a parish that shared a priest with St. Margaret Mary's in Edmore. In 1975, a shrine to the Blessed Mother and to St. Bernadette of Lourdes was built on parish grounds. Also, in 1975, a rectory was built on St. Margaret Mary's grounds to house the priests that serve both parishes.

The St. Bernadette of Lourdes Parish Center was built in 1976. It contains 7 classrooms, an office, a kitchen and a gymnasium for parish activities. At present there are 160 families belonging to St. Bernadette of Lourdes Parish. Since we are a small parish we are very family oriented. Being a rural area, our liturgies tend to be informal. But nevertheless, we lack nothing in our enthusiam and involvement in the parish. In our liturgies, we have variety. We have guitar masses, children's masses and an adult choir. Many people take an interest and are involved in the liturgical ministries.

We have an active Religious Education program from  K - 8 and R.C.I.A. The Knights of Columbus and the St. Bernadette of Lourdes Women's Club are an intregal part of the fund raising and social activities in the parish. The Pastoral Council and the Pastoral Finance Council assist the Pastor in the administration of the parish.

We also have a very active Bible Study Group that meets every Thursday evening. At the present time we are studying the daily mass readings for 2009. Recently, 2 new Bible Study Groups have been added. The women meet on Thursday at 12:00 noon preceeded by a salad potluck. The men meet on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m.preceeded by coffee and donuts.

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry is very active. Many of our parishioners are busy praying while they crochet or knit these prayer shawls. Since its inception 2 years ago, we have given over 400 prayer shawls to people all over the United States.

We also have our very own Religious Goods store on the parish grounds which is open after mass on Sundays.

We reach out to the needs of the community through the parish's Family Life coordinators.

Our Parish Center was newly renovated in 2007 and is available to anyone in the area for rent.

As you can see, the Holy Spirit is very active in our parish. We pray, we play and we care for one another.
