St. Charles Parish at 505 S. Lafayette St., Greenville, MI 48838 US - History of St. Charles' School
| History of St. Charles' School |
In 1919, Father Joseph Illig, pastor of St. Charles' and the Sisters of Mercy opened St. Charles' Academy in the large Slaght family home that stood on the site of the present playground. This school closed in 1927 due to lack of enrollment. In 1946, Father Anthony Bourdow re-opened the parish school. Classes were held on the first floor of the convent located on the corner of Benton and Franklin Streets. Three Sisters of St. Dominic from Adrian, Michigan, made up the core of the teaching staff. In 1956, due to increasing enrollment, Father Francis J. Kupinski, pastor, began construction of a modern five-classroom brick school on Franklin Street. In 1963, two more classrooms and an activities building/gymnasium were added. In 1997-98, in the lower level of the new church, two more classrooms and a music room were added, which now house the middle school grades (6-8). Today, St. Charles' School has excellent facilities, including a computer lab and a library to complement our excellent curriculum and programs.
