St. Denis School at 105 N. Winchester, Benton, MO 63736 US - Handbook

Handbook

Dear St.DenisSchool Families:

This handbook has been compiled as a source of information on policies, standards, and guidelines which affect the entire school population -- students, parents, faculty, and staff. It contains policies and regulations made by the Superintendent of Schools of Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese, Diocesan School Board Members, St. Denis School Board Members, Parish Priest, Principal, Faculty and Students. The policies and regulations cover a wide range of subjects and offer necessary uniformity and expectations for our school. No handbook can anticipate and address every situation that may arise. The Administration of St. Denis reserves the right to make decisions regarding circumstances that this handbook does not address. It is our hope that if we all know and live by the same rules and polices, St. DenisSchool will run smoothly and we all benefit.

Our mission is to assist students with growth in all areas of their lives so they will be whole persons as they contribute to society. This will be accomplished by offering an atmosphere of love and concern where students will have every opportunity to learn to the fullest extent of their abilities and to be able to live their lives according to the values of Jesus. We also hope to bring life to each other as a parish family through mutual respect and cooperation. These goals can only be attained if everyone works together and adheres to a common set of guidelines.

Our theme for this school year is “LOVE ONE ANOTHER”.   It is our goal to help the students develop just values in this demanding world.   Your help will be needed to underscore the school theme at home. Your suggestions and comments are also welcome.

The prayers printed on the cover of the handbook are ones that will be used at school. Please help your child memorize them.

Please read through the handbook and become familiar with its contents. It contains policies and procedures that you need to be familiar with. If you have questions or concerns about any of the information, please feel free to contact me. I also invite you to contact me at any time through the school year if you have problems or concerns about your child. It is much easier and more beneficial to all if we can deal with issues as they arise rather than after they have been allowed to become more complex.

Please read the handbook with your family and return the accompanying form stating that you are aware of its contents and expectations and that you will do your part to see that the policies and regulations can be carried out. The enclosed sheet must be signed and on file by the first week of classes.

Thank you for being part of St.DenisSchool. Let's work together for the success of our students, our mission and our future.

May God Bless You,

ST. DENIS PRAYER
Dear St. Denis, pray that we find courage when we are frightened. By your example, may we love when we are full of hatred. When we fall, pray we have the strength to get up. Assist us to succeed and not fail. Through your prayers, may we be faithful and holy. Amen.                                                                                                                                                                    By Thomas DeBrock, 2001

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of St.DenisSchool is to prepare children for life as a member of church, family, and community. This will be achieved by following the teachings of Christ as understood in the Roman Catholic tradition.

PHILOSOPHY

The purpose of St.DenisSchool is the holistic development of each child. Since we are a CatholicSchool, our focus centers on:

1. Religious Development; where spiritual formation, understanding of content of our faith, worshiping together, encouraging religious vocations, and of being of service to each other are stressed.

2. Moral Development; where values, self-discipline, good citizenship, cooperation, respect and social    responsibility are demonstrated.

                3. Academic developments; where the mastery of skills and a habit of lifelong learning is stressed.

                4. Physical Development; where the physical well being of each child is developed and strengthened.

                5. Cultural Development; where an appreciation of nature and the fine arts are cultivated.

                6. Preparing the child for life as a member of Church, family and a global community.

Students have the right to a quality education in an environment that is conducive to learning and free from discrimination. Students, therefore have the responsibility to put forth their best effort, to observe the rules and regulations, and to show respect for everyone including faculty, staff, and other students.

The teacher's role is that of facilitator of learning. The teacher helps the students master basic skills by working with each child at their level and learning style and helping the child think logically, creatively and independently. The best is expected from everyone.

Parents are the primary educators of their children. The school assists the parents in filling this role. The role of the parents is to support the school and its activities. This is accomplished by working closely with teachers, developing positive attitudes toward school, and encouraging the child in his/her work. Parents' example at home can reinforce the values taught at school.

ADMISSION POLICY
St.DenisSchool does not discriminate on the basis of sex, color or race in the enrollment of students.

St. Denis School gives preference in admission to: 1. siblings of currently enrolled St. Denis students, 2.   Catholic students living within the parish boundaries, 3.   Catholic students outside of St. Denis Parish, 4. Catholic students who do not have a Catholic school, 5. Non-Catholic students. Classroom size is limited to 30 students.

ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION

1.                    When students first enroll at St. Denis, they will need to present a copy of their birth certificate, immunization records, health information, social security card, previous school records, and a Baptismal certificate (if not baptized at St. Denis).
2.                    Students of St. Denis School must be residing with a parent or legal guardian of a person who has been given power of attorney by a natural parent. Written proof of legal leadership is required for those students not residing with a parent. Should a student be living with anyone other that the above stated parties, the student will be suspended.
3.                    Parents/legal guardian will be expected to discuss any known mental, emotional or physical handicap or learning disability to ascertain whether the School can meet the needs of the child. If needs cannot be met, other educational alternatives will be recommended. If information is withheld, the School is under no obligation to honor the enrollment.
4.                    Students will be expected to participate in all religious studies and activities unless excused by pastor/principal in extreme cases.
5.                    Parents/legal guardians must be willing to uphold all school policies and to support the school in its financial endeavors.
6.                    No student may enroll in St. Denis School during a suspension or expulsion from another district if it is determined upon attempt to enroll that the student’s conduct would have resulted in a suspension or expulsion from St. Denis School.

RE-ENROLLMENT of students occurs in the spring of the year for the next school year.

ADMISSION OF TRANSFER STUDENTS
Prior to the admission of a transfer student, the principal will be in contact with the student’s previous school. Admission may be granted if the principal can determine there are no extenuating circumstances that interfere with the learning of students currently enrolled at St. Denis. The following must be presented prior to final registration: (1) Records and/or the most recent report card from the school formerly attended to indicate abilities and to assist in proper placement of students. (2) Baptismal certificate (if the student is Catholic), (3) Birth certificate (4) Up-to-date Health records. A 90 (ninety) day or one-quarter probationary period will be given.   At that the student may; remain on probation, be removed from probation, (parents will be notified), or alternate placement will be suggested.

TRANSFERRING FROM ST. DENIS
When it becomes necessary for a child to transfer to another school the principal of St.DenisSchool needs to be contacted by the parent. Records will be mailed to the new school only after a formal request signed by the parent has been received from the new school and St.DenisSchool has received payments for any outstanding charges.

RE-ADMITTANCE
Students may be re-admitted who have shown cooperation with school policies and expectations and whose parents have shown cooperation with faculty, and administration in the education of the student, and whose parents have been active members in their parish or church.

CONDUCT & EFFORT
Both conduct in the classroom and effort have a direct link to academic achievements. Students will be given a grade in each of these areas each quarter by the homeroom teacher in collaboration with other teachers that the student may have. The following grading system will be used: (Satisfactory) S+, S, S-, or (Unsatisfactory) U. Students receiving grades in the Satisfactory range will be eligible for Honor Roll. Those receiving grades in the Unsatisfactory range will not be eligible for Honor Roll.

CURRICULUM
The curriculum places emphasis on the development of knowledge, skills, and understanding appropriate to its student body.

St.DenisSchool curriculum includes:
Religion                 Reading                 English                   Social Studies
Mathematics        Science                  Spelling                  Physical Education
Music                     Art                          *Spanish (8th)      Computers
Handwriting          Character Education
* Depending on the availability of a teacher.

HOMEWORK
The purpose of homework is to reinforce the lessons taught. Assignments are based on work that has been taught during the day and should not, therefore, require a great deal of explanation on the part of the parent. If the assigned work takes more than the ordinary concentrated amount of time please do not hesitate to consult the teacher. The teacher may be able to suggest some means to cope with the problem. An arranged time and place for homework is helpful for good study habits.

Parents should not do a child’s homework. This does not help a child learn. Often when a parent does the homework for the child, then he/she is not able to make proper grades on tests. Parent assistance will be needed for homework.

Ordinarily, Grades 1-2 will have 15-20 minutes of homework; Grades 3-4 will have 30-45 minutes of homework; Grades 5-6 will have 45-60 minutes of homework: Grades 7-8 will have 45-75 minutes of homework. The time should be used for study, reading or for special projects that might be in progress. Extra study time should be expected if the student has a test.

Participation in extracurricular activities should not interfere with the completion of evening assignments.

PROGRESS REPORTS
Mid-quarter grades are sent home approximately 5 weeks into each quarter. These reports must be signed by the parent and returned to school within three days.   Teachers or parents may request a conference at this time.

Report cards are distributed four times a year. The report card envelopes are to be signed by the parent and returned to school within three days. Any request for a grade change must be made in writing to the teacher within one week of the receipt of the grade.

Tuition, book fees, and lunch money must be current or the report card will not be sent home. If fees are not up-to-date, the student will be allowed to view the card then a note will be placed in the envelope indicating that back fees are due. The parents will receive the actual report card when arrangements have been made with the principal concerning updating payments.

HONOR ROLL
All students are eligible for the academic Honor Roll system. Students will be recognized for their academic achievements at the end of each quarter. To qualify for Honor Roll, students must receive only A's, B's, or S’s on their report cards in all subjects. No grade lower than a B- or S- in any subject area will be acceptable for Honor Roll distinction.

SCHEDULED PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
Formal Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled at the end of the first quarter. Both parents are encouraged to come for the conference. The parent or teacher may schedule other conferences as the need arises. All home room teachers stay after school until at least 3:20 p.m. Should you request a conference at a time later than 3:20 p.m., arrangements must be made with the teacher.

UNSCHEDULED CONFERENCES
Parents need to be aware that teachers arrive at school by 7:30 a.m. This time is needed to prepare for the day with your child. Children arrive in the classroom by 7:45. If you need to discuss a matter with a teacher before school, please arrange a time so the teacher is prepared for the school day and is able to give you her full attention.

RESOURCE ROOM
This classroom is available for a limited amount of students with learning differences. Students are chosen to spend time in this classroom based on need of the student, available time, and recommendation from the teacher or parent.

PROMOTION
Students who have achieved mastery of grade level curricula will be promoted to the next grade at the end of the current school year.

RETENTION
Parents will be notified by the teacher of any serious difficulty. At the end of the year when a student is transferred to the next grade over the advice of the school staff, parents will be required to sign a statement that they realize the transfer is against the professional advice of the school staff.

STANDARDIZED TESTING
Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) standardized achievement tests are given annually to students in grades 2-8. These will be given in October with tests results sent to the parents in November.

CUMULATIVE SCHOOL RECORDS
St.DenisSchool maintains a file for each student’s health, academic and immunization records. When parents wish to view a child’s school records, a 24-hour written notice is required.

LIBRARY
Approximately each week, students will have the opportunity to visit the School library and the Riverside Regional Library. Times are arranged according to the classroom schedule. Parents must sign a permission slip for the child to walk to the public library.

SCHOOL ROUTINE
CALENDAR
The school year consists of 174 days of student attendance. Days dismissed because of school holiday, teachers' meetings, or inclement weather days are not included in these 174 days. St.DenisSchool is usually not in session on Holy Days of Obligation. Sometimes it may be necessary to use a Holy Day as a make up day for inclement weather.   This will occur after consultation between the principal and the pastor.

ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to attend class regularly. Parents are required to telephone the school if a child is going to be absent. This is for the safety of the child. Do not rely on another child to notify the teacher when a sibling is absent.   As a safety precaution, when a student is not at school and no message has been received from a parent, the parent will be contacted at work. After a child has been absent, a written notice must be returned to school stating the reason for the child absence.

When a student is to be released early from school, a written request is necessary from a parent or guardian indicating the reason and who will be picking up the child.

A sick child will not be sent home until a parent or guardian is first notified.

Vacation time during the school year is strongly discouraged since the child is missing valuable class time.

PROLONGED ABSENCE DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
When a student is absent for 2 hours or more during any part of the school day, it is considered ½ day absent. When a student misses 4 or more hours, it is considered a full day of absence.

Students are expected to attend classes for at least one half of the day if they intend to participate in an extra-curricular activity that evening. If they are absent all day for an illness, they will not be able to participate in an extra-curricular activity that day.

Work and assignments for an absent child may be picked up after school. When a child is absent, tardy or released from school early, he/she is responsible for work assigned. It is also the responsibility of the student to ask the teacher for missed assignments. Students who are absent due to illness have one day for each day of absence to make up the missed assignments, quizzes or tests. For example, a student who was absent three days would be given three school days to complete the missed work.

When a student is absent for three of more days to illness, a parent may call the school office before 10:00 AM to arrange homework assignments. Homework assignments may be picked up at the school office.

Arrangements for regular classroom tests missed because of an absence are to be made with the individual teachers. These tests must be taken within one week of the original test date.

Excessive absence (30) days or the equivalent of 30 days including tardies, can be cause for a student to be retained in the current grade for another year.

Medical, dental and other appointments should be scheduled outside of school time as much as possible. Students needing medical appointments during school hours require a written note by the parent. Parents are required to sign out their child. If the child returns to school during the same school day, he/she must be signed back into school at the office. Students who are away from school for an appointment for 2 hours or more will be counted as absent for ½ a day. Three early withdrawals each of which are less than 2 hours are considered a ½ day absence.

ARRIVAL
Supervision begins at 7:20 a.m. in the gym. Children are to come into the gym, sit down and talk quietly in groups. Permission must be granted from the teacher on duty before a child may leave the gym. Students will be dismissed to their classrooms at 7:45. ONLY students arriving after 7:45 may go directly to their classrooms. The school day begins at 7:50 a.m.

TARDY / EARLY OUT
Children arriving after 7:50 a.m. will be counted tardy. Students leaving school before dismissal time, but less than 2 hours before dismissal, will have an EARLY OUT (E.O.). This will be counted as a tardy. Three (3) or more tardies or early dismissals during one quarter will count against the child’s perfect attendance. An exception is a child leaving for special services such as speech class.

DISMISSAL
Regular dismissal is at 3:00 p.m. Those riding the first bus are dismissed at 2:40 p.m.  Students waiting for the second bus must wait in the gym with the teacher on duty. All other children must leave the school grounds. Any child who remains in the school building or on the school grounds after the busses will be sent to the office. The parents will be notified and arrangements will be made to get the child home.

DISMISSAL DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
A written request from a parent or guardian is required for a child to leave before the time of dismissal. The written request should include the child’s name, date, time of dismissal and the name of the person who will call for the child. Any student leaving during the school day must have a parent/guardian sign out the child at the office. Any student returning during the day must check in at the office.

PARKING LOT AND END OF DAY DISMISSAL
Parents picking up their children in cars are asked to follow these guidelines when parking: (1) Park facing the ParishCenter, school, or the street. (2) Do not park parallel to the street or in the middle of the parking lot. This area is reserved for the bus and student access to the bus.

LEAVING SCHOOL GROUNDS
Children are not permitted to leave school grounds at any time during the school day except for valid reasons. This privilege will not be granted without a signed, dated note from the parent and/or permission from the principal. Students remaining for sports practices, immediately after school, are still under school supervision and therefore this rule applies to them.

RECESS / BREAK PERIODS
Children in grades K - 4 are given a recess after lunch as well as another recess either in the morning or the afternoon depending on the classroom schedule. Students in grades 5 - 8 are given breaks between classes and at lunch.
All students are expected to take part in activities outside at recess unless:
a) The weather is inclement
b) The student has been asked by the teacher to stay inside
c) A written note has been sent by the parent requesting the child stay inside.

SNACKS
Any child may bring a snack. The classroom teacher will assign a time when snacks may be eaten. Only nutritional snacks should be sent to avoid those with high sugar contents. Candy should NOT be sent as a snack.

DRINKS
Only water may be brought for classroom consumption. Water, juice or tea may be brought for lunch only if the child brings his/her lunch or if there is a medical reason for not drinking milk.

JUICE MACHINE
The juice machine, located in the ParishCenter, is not available to students during the day except as a special treat from a teacher. Students may purchase juice after school only. The cost is 50 cents for water, 75 cents for juice and $1.25 for vitamin water. A bill changer is available on the machine. Proceeds go toward the purchase of special items or events for the school.

INCLEMENT WEATHER
Conditions such as snow or icy roads may necessitate the closing of school.   After the Principal consults with the Kelly School Superintendent, notification will be given on KFVS as early as possible.

If KellySchool delays school because of fog or other inclement weather, St. Denis will begin as usual. If a child rides the bus and comes late, he/she will not be counted tardy but missed work will have to be made up. However, if Kelly finally calls off school after a delay, the child will be counted absent. Please use your discretion about sending your children when inclement weather is impending.

A home telephone chain will be used when there is a change in dismissal or arrival plans.

When early dismissal is decided during the school day, children will be dismissed according to the plans you have outlined on the “Disaster Information and Release Form”. To avoid confusion, please keep this information current.

Parties for Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day are planned in conjunction with room-parents and the classroom teacher. Plans should be kept simple. Treat donations will be assigned to those parents who sign up.    Halloween and Valentine’s Parties begin at 2:00 with games or a movie in the classroom.  The Christmas party will follow the same format but the times may differ according to the dismissal time for that day.

Inviting students to private parties may be done at school ONLY if the entire class or gender is invited.

Students sometimes enjoy giving their teacher a birthday party. Students MUST have permission from the principal before the party is planned.

MAINTENANCE
The school building and its contents (including books) are provided for student use. While some wear and tear can be expected of books, abuse of them cannot be tolerated. If books, desks, or materials are lost or damaged, the student will be expected to pay for them. If a student willfully damages or defaces school property, the parents of the student may be called for a conference with the Principal and Teacher involved.

MAINTENANCE OF TEXTBOOKS
Students writing in textbooks have become a frequent and unfortunate occurrence. This is not only defacing school property but renders the books useless and inhibits learning since some answers are written in the book by previous students. At the beginning of the school year students will check books for damages and the teachers will note them. Students will be charged for book damage and replacement at the end of the year if there are excessive markings or abuse to the books.

I-PODS
I-pods will not be permitted on school property. If I-pods are brought to school they will be confiscated and parents will be notified to come and pick them up.

CELL PHONES
Student cell phones are discouraged. If one is brought to school the students must bring the cell phone to the office upon arrival in the morning to park the cell phone in the off position for the day. The cell phone may be picked up by the student at dismissal. At no time during the day should a cell phone be in a student’s possession. An exception for phone use is during an extreme emergency. Phones can be confiscated if rules are not followed.
Items taken away from students will be returned to the parent(s)/guardian on the last day of the school year.

Students must be responsible for accessing only appropriate web sites and reporting any accidental “hits” of inappropriate sites. Parent permission for a student to use the Internet during school hours must be on file at school. A consent form is sent home at the beginning of the year. Failure to comply with the expected behaviors as outlined in the contract may result in forfeiting usage privileges.

BULLYING AND CYBERBULLYING

Field trips are privileges and students can be denied participation if they fail to meet academic or behavioral requirements. All school rules remain in force during field trips.

Parents may refuse to permit their child from participating in a field trip by stating so on the proper form. Students who do not attend a field trip will remain at home with the parent and will be marked absent for the day.

CONFIDENTIALITY
There may be times when a student confides in a teacher either through conversation or a journal. Teachers will keep confidential information entrusted to them so long as no one’s life or safety is at stake. Parents will be promptly notified of teacher concerns.

St.DenisSchool must have accurate custodial information on file. If there is a court order specifying that there is to be no information given to the non-custodial parent or if the child is not to be released to the non-custodial parent, it is the custodial parent’s responsibility to provide the school with a court-certified copy of the court order.

DISCIPLINE
ATMOSPHERE OF DISCIPLINE
An important aim of Catholic education is the Christian development of the person.   Discipline is necessary for this development. It is important that students learn to get along with others and to respect one another. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that does not interfere with the rights, privileges and safety of others. Conduct in or out of school directly reflects on the school.

The immediate goal of discipline is to create a favorable atmosphere for learning. Students are encouraged to develop good habits such as courtesy, respect, kindness, helpfulness, cooperation, responsibility, as well as good study habits.

Self-discipline is the goal of each student. The idea of discipline is to enable students to move from externally imposed discipline to self-discipline. Self-discipline is an indication that one is capable of accepting responsibilities and privileges.

If a problem arises, the classroom teacher will handle the situation. If a more serious situation exists, the student may be referred to the Principal.

Teachers and the Principal are empowered to assign detention or deny privileges to students for any problem that may arise: misconduct, inappropriate behavior, and consistent disregard for school rules.

Any student accused of a serious wrong can be placed on home study.

PROCEDURE FOR PARENT OR TEACHER CONCERN/PROBLEM
Parental support of school policies and personnel is expected. If a parent notes a problem or concern, the following sequence should be used:
1. Parents are to discuss problems with the child's teacher. The teacher may discuss these problems with parent(s), but only in a designated place before or after school. Not during school hours.
2. If the problem is not resolved, parents may then confer with the principal and teacher.
3. If the above fails to satisfy those involved, the matter may be brought to the Pastor and then to the School Board.

If the teacher is faced with the problem or concern, the following will be instituted:
1. Discuss the problem with the parents.
2. If the problem is not resolved, confer with the principal and the parents.

SUSPENSION
(Excerpts from Diocese of Springfield-CapeGirardeauCatholicSchool Manual)
"Every effort should be made to avoid suspending a student from school. The Principal can suspend a student from school for a justifiable reason, but in so doing judges this to be a course of action that will be preventive and corrective.”
Possible causes for suspension include but are not limited to:
__Open defiance of school authority
__Striking a teacher
__Possession or use of alcoholic beverages at school or school-related function
__Possession or use of a controlled substance at school or school-related function
__Possession or use of a weapon or anything that would threaten the welfare of anyone present in the school or at a school-related function (Immediate suspension)
__Any verbal threat or physical threat of violence
A student may not be suspended from school for the same offense for more than 10 consecutive school days. In a more serious matter, the principal in consultation with the pastor of the school or president of the board in a consolidation, may take another action as they see fit. Rules and regulations of the Missouri Safe Schools Act will supersede this policy.

EXPULSION
(Excerpts from Diocese of Springfield-CapeGirardeauCatholicSchool Manual)
"The expulsion of a student by the Principal from a CatholicSchool is very serious and this action should be evoked only as a last resort. Moral delinquency is a sufficient reason for expelling if the delinquency is persistent and has a bad influence on the other students in the school. The following are additional causes for expulsion:
__Civil marriage
__Selling of a controlled substance at school or school-related function
__For a second offense during the school year for either possession or use of a controlled substance or possession or consumption of an alcoholic beverage at school or school-related functions
__For a violation for which there were two disciplinary suspensions during the school year
__For any other conduct or activity of a serious nature that is considered harmful to the schools reputation or is contradictory to Catholic moral teachings and principles

Approval of the Pastor is to be obtained by the Principal before a student is expelled. If an expulsion is judged immediately necessary but the principal cannot obtain the approval of the Pastor, a suspension should be evoked until a further decision can be made. (From Diocese of Springfield-CapeGirardeauCatholicSchool Manual)

RIGHT OF APPEAL
The student or parents have the right of appeal in disciplinary actions of suspension and expulsion. The first appeal is to be made to the Principal of the school. If the parents or student are not satisfied with the Principal’s decision on appeal, they may then appeal to the Pastor. (From Diocese of Springfield-CapeGirardeauCatholicSchool Manual)

COMPLAINT PROCEDURE
Any person who believes that he or she has been sexually harassed or subjected to other unlawful harassment should immediately report the matter to his her supervisor, pastor, principal, or to the Chancellor of the Diocese. Anyone who becomes aware of any possible sexual harassment should immediately advise the supervisor, pastor, principal, or Chancellor. The supervisor, pastor, principal should then report the complaint to the Chancellor of the Diocese, who will direct the investigation. The complaint will be investigated in as confidential a manner as possible. A resolution of the issue will be offered within 60 days of the complaint and appropriate action will be taken. There will be no retaliation against persons complaining of harassment or against any persons who assist or give information in support of such complaints. If there are any complaints of retaliation, they should be brought to the attention of the Chancellor of the Diocese.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

EXTRA CURRICULAR
We believe our goal as educators is to encourage and motivate students to use their God-given gifts and talents to their fullest potential. As a school, we believe academics are primary to this goal with extra-curricular activities being secondary. Only students enrolled at St.DenisSchool may participate in the extra-curricular activities.

A student's participation in extra-curricular activities is a privilege, not a right. The privilege may be withdrawn for the following reasons but is not limited to: misconduct at school, poor academic performance, unwillingness to cooperate with the coach or sponsor, or failure to be adequately insured against injury. Each coach or sponsor, with the concurrence of the principal, may establish his/her own rules for a particular activity. Practices and practice games may not be scheduled more than two nights during the week. A student must be in school that day in order to practice or participate in a sporting event that evening.

ACTIVITIES
St.DenisSchool offers a variety of activities to the students. Students are urged to take part in as many of these activities as they can reasonably handle without harming their academic achievements. Each activity has something to offer in the way of development of the total personality of the child. Available activities include:
Mass Servers (Grades 3-8)                                 Athletic Programs (Minimum academic performance required*):
Student Council (Grades 3-8)                             Basketball, Girls & Boys

Behavioral Requirements – St. Denis Students have an expected code of proper behavior. A student who must serve any detention will be suspended from game play until the Monday following the detention. Sports suspension for behavioral reasons other than detention may be assessed by the principal. Specific individual cases are left to the discretion of the Pastor or Principal.

During suspension for Academic or Behavioral reasons, the student is expected to attend practice. He/she will be required to attend the games, dress out, and sit on the bench with the team. Play will not be permitted.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
Since children are in close proximity in a classroom, diseases spread rapidly. If a child is running a temperature, has a rash, inflamed eyes or has vomited in the previous few hours before the school day, please do not send the child until he/she has been given a clean bill of health. A fever must be gone for 24 hours before a child may return.

FIRST AID
The school asks parents to complete a regular emergency form at the beginning of the school year as well as one to be used should a disaster occur. Parents or guardians are notified as soon as possible (using information from these forms) in case of sudden illness or serious injury.   Should important phone numbers or other information change during the year, please notify the office with updated information.

When a child must take prescription medicine at school, a signed and dated WRITTEN NOTICE must be sent to school stating the child's name, the correct dosage to be given and the time at which the medicine is to be administered. ALL medication to be dispensed at school MUST be in original packaging (#5298). Only one day’s dosage of prescription medicine should be sent to school at a time. This is for the protection of the child and so the bottle of medicine won’t be forgotten at the end of the day.

The Principal has the authority to inspect all school or personal property. Items considered a hazard or nuisance in the school or on the playground are subject to immediate confiscation and will not be returned until the end of the school year.

PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES

It is extremely important that a child be thoroughly convinced that his/her parents stand behind the school and that they will demand an accounting of what the child does in school. Without such a clear understanding, a child can come to think that home and school are separate and unrelated areas of authority. Each teacher in school is sincerely interested in doing all in his/her power to help your child develop all unique God-given potentialities. We can best serve your child by working together, by checking out whatever misunderstanding might come up, and by supporting one another in all school related areas. If there is a difference of opinion, do call us, or make an appointment so things can be talked over. We may not immediately conform to your wishes, but can surely come to some understanding that will safeguard the child's respect for both parents and teacher.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS
As parents in the educational process at St.DenisSchool, we ask parents:

To set rules, times, and limits so that your child:
                * Gets to bed early on school nights;
                * Arrives at school on time and is picked up on time at the end of the day:
                * Is dressed according to the school dress code; and

PARENT’S ROLE IN EDUCATION
We, at St.DenisSchool, consider it a privilege to work with parents in the education of children because we believe parents are the primary educators of their children. Therefore, it is your right and your duty to become the primary role models for the development of your child’s life---physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and psychologically. Your choice of St.DenisSchool involves a commitment and exhibits a concern for helping your child to recognize God as the greatest good in his/her life.

Good example is the strongest teacher. Your personal relationship with God, with each other, and with the Church community will affect the way your child relates to God and others. Ideals taught in school are not well rooted in the child unless these are nurtured by the example of good Catholic/Christian morality and by an honest personal relationship with God in your family life.

Once you have chosen to enter into a partnership with us at St.DenisSchool, we trust you will be loyal to this commitment. During these formative years (K to 8), your child needs constant support from both parents and faculty in order to develop his/her moral, intellectual, social, cultural, and physical endowment. Neither parents nor teachers can afford to doubt the sincerity of the efforts of their educational partner in the quest of challenging, or nourishing, the student to reach his/her potential. It is vital that both parents and teachers remember that allowing oneself to be caught between the student and the other partner will never have positive results. To divide authority between school and home or within the home will only teach disrespect of all authority. If there is an incident at school, you as parents must make investigation of the complete story your first step. Evidence of mutual respect between parents and teachers will model good mature behavior and relationships.

Students are naturally eager to grow and learn. However, sometimes in the process of maturation new interests may cause them to lose focus. As this natural process occurs, the student needs both understanding and discipline. At times, your child may perceive discipline as restrictive. However, it is boundaries and limits which provide a young person with both guidance and security.

It is essential that a child take responsibility for grades he/she has earned and be accountable for homework, long-term assignments, major tests, service projects, and all other assignments. This responsibility also extends to times of absence.

Together, let us begin this year with a commitment to partnership as we support one another in helping your child to become the best person he/she is capable of becoming.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION
In order to insure that all communication from school reaches home in a timely many, St.DenisSchool uses a Wednesday folder system. Folders containing all correspondence are sent home on Wednesdays and should be returned the following day. Your child is responsible for emptying the contents of his/her folder before it is returned to school

SCHOOL BOARD
The St. Denis School Board is a consultative and advisory board to the pastor and principal. The board meets on a regular basis. (#2802) It consists of six elected members from the parish community, the Home & School president, pastor, and principal. Each spring two new members are elected. Contact the school office or a Board member if you wish to be considered as a candidate for election to the Board.

HOME AND SCHOOL ORGANIZATION
St. Denis Home & School Organization is a means to foster unity of purpose between home and school. The Home & School meetings provide parents and school staff with opportunities to meet and discuss ways to work together for the development of themselves and the students. It is not a policy-making organization.  Its primary function at St. Denis is fund-raising. (#1015) ALL parents of students are considered members of the Home & School Organization and are expected to actively participate.

VOLUNTEER DRIVERS
Parents are asked to fill out a Volunteer Driver's Form at the beginning of the year so they will be available to drive students to and from field trips. This form must be on file before any parent will be able to be a driver for a classroom field trip. A new form is to be filled out at the beginning of each school year.

SPECIAL EVENTS
