St. Elizabeth of Hungary
The feast of St. Elizabeth of Hungary - celebrated on November 17th - fittingly falls at the time of year when our thoughts and actions turn toward the less fortunate during the so-called "season of giving." During her brief 24 years on earth, St. Elizabeth gave completely to the sick, destitute, and downtrodden that Pope Gregory IX canonized her just four years after her death, calling her "the greatest woman of the German Middle Ages." Born into nobility in 1207, Elizabeth was the daughter of the King of Hungary. She was married by the age of 14 and widowed by the age of 20. The mother of three children, she joined the Secular Franciscan Order - of which she is the patron saint - and soon after built the Franciscan hospital at Marburg in Hungary. Her life was marked by personally tending to the needs of ill patients and the hundreds of poor she gave food to daily. It is piously believed that "for each prayer offered to Elizabeth there is one less suffering soul on Earth."
