WHO CAN BE A GODPARENT?
This question is asked quite often!
Choosing godparents for our children can be a tricky business. We want to be sure that they will be involved with our children as well as being wholesome, positive role models. The Church has some basic criteria for helping us to choose godparents. It is necessary to have one godparent, but two is customary and usual. If there is one godparent, they may be male or female. If there are two, one must be male and one female. The godparent must be a fully initiated, practicing Catholic, sixteen years of age or older. Fully initiated means that they must be baptized Catholic, have received Eucharist and have been Confirmed. The other can be a Christian. They would be the Christian witness. The godparents may not be the legal parents of the child. What happens if the godparents can not be present for the baptism? A proxy, or stand-in, may be used.
