Prayers for a World in Need

Prayer for Health (Added 8/23)

Almighty and merciful God,
you are the source of healing and health;
You alone can bring calmness and peace.
Grant to us, your children,
a consciousness of your presence and strong confidence in you.
In our pain, our weariness, and our anxiety, surround us with your care,
protect us by your loving might,
and permit us once more to enjoy health and strength and peace. Amen.

Prayer for Peace (Added 7/18)

Gracious and holy God,
lead us from death to life, from falsehood to truth.
Lead us from despair to hope, from fear to trust.
Lead us from hate to love, from war to peace.
Let peace fill our hearts, our world, our universe. Amen.

Prayer for Difficulty in Employment (Added 7/1)

God of justice, we remember before you those who suffer want and anxiety
from lack of work or fear of losing work. Guide the people of this land so to use
our wealth and resources that all people may find suitable and fulfilling
employment and receive just payment for their labor. Amen.

Prayer for Pilgrims and Travelers (Added 6/18)

My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think I am following your will
does not mean I actually am.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.
And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing.
And I know that if I do this,
you will lead me by the right road
though I may not realize it.
Therefore I will trust you always
through I may seem to be lost
and in the shadow of death, I will not fear,
for you are ever with me
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
(Thomas Merton, Monk)

Thought (Added 5/16)

Is your 401K "trashed"?
Take STOCK in God.

Prayer to Down to Earth God (Added 5/14)

What a transforming relief it is, O God revealed in scripture,
that you are not the carefully vetted, tame God of historians and philosophers,
but a living and personal God capable of interacting with us.
Move among us now, consoling and encouraging us for the days ahead. Amen.

Prayer after a Job Loss
(Added 4/3)

Thank you, Heavenly Father, that in the middle of the sadness, the anger,
the uncertainty, the pain, I can talk to you. Hear me as I cry out in confusion,
help me to think clearly, and calm my soul. As life carries on,
may I know your presence with me each and every day.
And as I look to the future, help me to look for fresh opportunities, for new directions.
Guide me by your Spirit, and show me your path,
through Jesus, the way, the truth and the life. Amen.

Serenity Prayer

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
enjoying one moment at a time;
accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
taking, as Christ did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
trusting that he will make all things right if I surrender to his will;
so that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with him forever in the next. Amen.

What Actions Are Most Excellent?

What actions are most excellent?
   To gladden the heart of a human being,
   to feed the hungry,
   to help the afflicted,
   to lighten the sorrowful,
   and to remove the wrongs of the injured.
All God's creatures are God's family,
and he is the most beloved of God who does most good to God's creatures.
(Muhammed)

A Prayer Upon Receiving Bad News

Dear God,
I've just heard dreaded words I did not want to hear.
My spirit is shattered. My world is falling apart.
I want to fight, to rebel, to flee from the reality of this.
No matter how angry, deserted,  or disappointed I feel, your love
will never let me go. You will provide your sustaining courage
regardless of the future. Please grant me and my loved ones
courage for whatever lies ahead. Help me to remember that you
do understand, and want me to be comforted. Amen.

A Prayer for Patience

God, our Father, Praise is due to your name for your mercy.
You have dealt gently with Your children in love. You have been
patient with me in my stubbornness and humaness.
Lord, though the work of your Spirit, prompt me to be more jubilant
in hope, more patient in times of trouble, and more consistent in
my prayer life. Teach me, Lord, to wait with faith and expectancy,
and may my trials be seen as times for growth in grace. Amen.

Let Us Run the Race

Let us run with perseverance the race laid out for us. Let us not lose sight of Jesus,
who leads us in our faith and brings it to perfection.
For the sake of the joy to come, Jesus endured the cross
and now sits at the right of God's throne.
Think of Jesus, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Prayer in the current Financial Crisis

Lord God, we live in disturbing days,
across the world,
prices rise,
debts increase,
banks collapse,
jobs are taken away,
and fragile security is under threat.
Loving God, meet us in our fear and hear our prayer:
be a tower of strength amidst the shifting sands,
and a light in the darkness;
help us receive your gift of peace,
and fix our hearts where true joys are to be found,
in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Employment

God, our Father, I turn to you seeking your divine help and
guidance as I look for suitable employment.
I need your wisdom to guide my footsteps along the right path, and
to lead me to find the proper things to say and do in this quest. I
wish to use the gifts and talents you have given me, but I need the
opportunity to do so with gainful employment.
Do not abandon me, dear Father, in this search, but rather grant
me this favor I seek so that I may return to you with praise and
thanksgiving for your gracious assistance.
Grant this through Christ, our Lord.
Amen

The Sacramentary

Wisdom from St. Paul

I have learned, in whatever situation I find myself, to be self-sufficient.
I know indeed how to live in humble circumstances;
I know also how to live with abundance.
In every circumstance and in all things
I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry,
of living in abundance and of being in need.
I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me.
Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress.

Philippians 4: 11-14

Prayer for Peace in Trying Times

Gracious God, I worry that I won't have enough to pay my bills,
that my resources will become so thin that my enjoyment of life will diminish,
that I won't be able to survive an emergency or crisis.
Help me to trust that I am as important to you as the lily in the field,
or the sparrow in the tree. When I feel the bands of fear tightening around me,
strengthen my faith in the power of your providence. Remind me of your love
and watchfulness, so I rest in your protective embrace, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Psalm 90

O Lord, you have been our refuge
from one generation to the next.
Before the mountains were born,
or the earth or the world brought forth,
you are God, without beginning or end.

Show forth your work to your servants;
let your glory shine on their children.
Let the favor of the Lord be upon us:
give success to the work of our hands,
give success to the work of our hands.
