CLASSROOM TIMES

The second quarter of school is well underway.  We are working very hard to stay focused.

In Religion, we are learning about forgiveness.  Please keep the second grade in your prayers as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  There will be a short parent meeting for those receiving the Sacrament on Thursday, Nov. 5th at 7:00. 
Please call the office if you are unable to make it, as it is a very small group.

Reading/Language Arts
Kindergarten is learning about animals and their babies in the story ANIMALS OF THE GRASSLANDS.  We will be working with animal stories for the next few weeks with the stories BEAR SNORES ON and A BED FOR WINTER.  Kindergarten continues to practice letter/sound correspondence and sight words.  Please practice these skills at home as well.
The First Grade is reading stories about pets.  Next week we will be learning about community workers.  We are learning about author's purpose, characterization and common/proper nouns.
The second grade will be spending a few weeks with fiction and nonfiction selections about creepy, crawly things such as mice, snakes, and spiders.  We are learning about singular and plural, bossy r , and long vowel words.  We are learning to compare and contrast using Venn diagrams.
Please continue to keep up with weekly reading logs and sight words.
Second grade began cursive this week - they are very excited and are doing a very nice job!

Math
Kindergarten is working with numbers 0-10. 
First grade continues to work on addition and subtraction facts to 12.
Second grade is working with addition and subtraction facts to 18.
Please practice facts at home.  There are many free on-line resources.

HALLOWEEN HOOT/CONFERENCES
Halloween Hoot is tomorrow!  Students can wear a Halloween t-shirt, socks, etc. with their uniform.  Join us if you dare!!!!!!!!!!!

Conferences are November 2, 2009.  If you are unable to meet at that time, please call the office or send a note to set up a more convenient time!

In Religion we are learning about forgiveness.

We are studying the terms sin, conscience, and free will.  Please review your weekly Take Home section with your child.

In Science, we are learning about habitats and food chains.  We will be creating dioramas in class for various habitats.

Kindergarten

The Kindergarten class is learning about machines that make work easier.  We are reading the story Dig, Dig, Digging.  We continue to work on letter recognition and sight words (I, am, to, a, little, the).

In Math we are working on patterns of size, shape and color. 

Next week, I will be testing Kindergarten on the skills we've been practicing in math and reading.

Please continue to work on word rings and reading logs each week.

First Grade

First grade is reading about growing and eating vegetables.  The stories A Big Job and Sweet Potato Pie show us the process from garden to table.  These are the last two stories of the unit.  Next week, they will be tested and word rings and skills they've been practicing throughout the unit.  In spelling, I will select 2 words from each week to study.

In Math, we continue to practice subtraction facts.  Keep practicing facts each night!

Second Grade

Second grade just finished  their reading unit.  They were tested this week and did a fabulous job!!  Next week we will begin a new unit - look for a new spelling word list on Monday.

In Math we continue to practice reading and writing numbers and number patterns to 100.

 

Rachel Enzweiler was our student of the month for the month of September.

Brooke Young will be our student of the month for October.
