Centennial Celebration

In the early 1880s settlers in the Neptune, Iowa area decided to establish a Catholic parish. In 1884 the parish was founded. A church building was built in 1885. The parish was served by priests from Le Mars and Kingsley. Then in 1899 the first house was built for the arrival of the first resident pastor. Since late 1999 parishioners have been preparing to celebrate the parish’s centennial of being a non-misison parish on Sunday 20 August 2000. The schedule for the day will be: 11:00 a.m. Mass presided by Bishop DiNardo (Bishop of Sioux City) and concelebrated by the current and several former pastors. 12:00 noon-1:00 p.m. pork loin meal catered by Hy-Vee. 12:00 noon-3:30 p.m. Open House and history display 1:00-3:00 p.m. Entertainment and games. The cost for the meal will be $5 for adults/$2.50 children 0-10. You can reserve your plate and place by contacting the parish by mail or e-mail. Entertainment will include Mary Ellen Stessman singing and playing her keyboard and games for all ages including volleyball. On display will be various items related to the history of the parish, including a piece of the communion railing preserved by Ray and Leona Sitzmann after it was removed in the early 1970s. A history book for the parish (1884-2000) has been complete and is available for $5. Everyone is invited to attend all or part of the day and celebrate one hundred years of faith that has impacted so many people.
