The world (each one of us) must come to the aid of the suffering people of Southern Sudan. The bombings must stop. The land mines must be removed. The raids on the villages must end. Starvation must be erased. Every human being has a right to live in peace. Gospel justice and peace demands this. Bishop Paride Taban and Auxiliary Bishop Akio Johnson Mutek are dedicated to educating the children and youth of Southern Sudan. The Khartoum government does not want children educated. It gives them more power and control when people are not conscious of their human rights. However, the building of schools is a primary goal of the Diocese of Torit. Young people are trained to make bricks and construct buildings. Contributions are needed for the construction of schools and youth centers. In addition, desks, educational materials, beds, cooking utensils, and fabric to make school uniforms are needed. New Methods of Planting Crops Starvation must end. Another goal of Bishop Paride Taban and Auxiliary Bishop Akio Johnson Mutek is to provide opportunities for the people of Southern Sudan to use new methods of planting crops. In addition to the war which kills crops, the climate of Southern Sudan also causes hunger and starvation. The people must learn new methods of farming in order to maintain enough food during the rainy season (from April through November) as well as through the dry season (from December through March). To carry out this project, they need some major farm equipment: —a secondhand tractor to help work the land; —a secondhand truck to help transport the produce they raise; —two motorcycles to transport workers. Medical Projects Health Clinics The recent bombings destroyed their health clinics. As a result of the bombings many people suffer from a variety of respiratory problems. The construction of a new clinic as well as medical supplies is an urgent need in Ikotos and Narus.
