Oil Company Confronted
From Catholic NY 5/10/01 |
A coalition of Church-based shareholders said a Canadian oil company's involvement in Sudan represents complicity with human rights violations in the African nation. The shareholders, through the Toronto-based Task Force on the Churches and Corporate Responsibility, confronted Talisman Energy Inc. president Him Buckee at the company's annual meeting May 1 and asked where $300 million in oil revenues provided to the Sudanese was used. Task force representative Joy Kennedy said Buckee responded in essence that the company does not "have any responsibility" for the money it gives to Sudan. "The Sudanese government has admitted that the money from oil revenues is being used to fight the war against rebels in the South," Ms. Kennedy said.
