H1N1 Response Procedures

H1N1 Response Procedures

Preventive Measures:
  • Normal cleaning with the additions of using antibacterial cleaning wipes on desks, door knobs, banisters, faucets, light switches and other high traffic areas at least twice a week.
  • An All school assembly included the following information:
    • Practice good hygiene by washing hands. Sing a short song while lathering, get tops and bottoms of hands, around nail beds and inbetween fingers. Rinse well, use paper towel to turn off water or to open the door after washing whenever possible.
    • Demonstrate and utilize covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing or coughing. If a tissue is unavailable, cough or sneeze into elbows or shoulders. This was part of the all school assembly and classroom instruction.
    • Avoid touching eyes, mouth, and nose.
  • An assembly for grades 5-8 (students who do or will serve lunch) repeated all of the above and included:
    • Wearing gloves, especially if you have a cut or band aid on your hands.
    • Hand washing after scraping or working at the sprayer, before touching clean dishes, eating, or leaving the premises.
    • Removing outer clothing and sweatshirts while serving.
    • Tasting or sampling should not be done while serving.
    • If you have a fever, diarrhea, sores, are vomiting, jaundice, or feeling ill you should not serve.
  • Each room contains hand-sanitizer and antibacterial cleaning wipes.
  • Keep students’ desks as far apart as possible.
  • Other precautions: reducing exposure by eliminating field trips to crowded places if necessary.
  • Posters will be hung around school, classrooms, and bathrooms.

Absences:
  • Parents that are calling to say that their child is absent due to sickness will be asked for symptoms to help us keep track of how the flu is spreading.
  • Follow-up calls to parents if messages are left without symptoms.
  • Students who have a fever of 100 degrees or higher will be sent home. Other symptoms include: cough, sore throat, body aches, a runny or stuffy nose, headache, felling tired.
  • If at all possible, the children will be isolated from the others by sitting outside or placed in the principal’s office while waiting to be picked up by parents.
  • Students should remain at home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have fever, or do not have signs of fever without using fever reducing drugs.
  • Students could potentially miss seven days or more.
  • Teachers will work with students concerning extended absences and homework.

Steps for Parents:
  • Practice good hygiene.
  • Demonstrate and utilize covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing or coughing. If a tissue is unavailable, cough or sneeze into elbows or shoulders.
  • Keep students at home when not feeling well in the morning and limit exposure to other children in the household.
  • Plan ahead for child care, or make arrangements with your work, should your child need to stay home for an extended period.
  • Work with your child’s teacher concerning homework options-email assignments, phone calls, etc.
  • Avoid large crowds, athletic events, shopping malls, church, and festivals, especially if someone in your family is ill.
