St. Luke Catholic School at 1290 Nachreiner Avenue, Plain, WI 53577 US - October 22, 2009 Parent Letter

October 22, 2009 Parent Letter

October 22, 2009

Dear Parent,

The flu has been fairly kind to us so far. We have had only one or two kids at a time out with flu symptoms and this week we have had days when there were no students out with flu symptoms. There seems to be so much flu throughout the district that exposure for our kids seems probable. We’ll continue to be diligent about hand washing and cleaning. Please encourage your children to keep hands clean and stay home if they have flu symptoms.

Our vaccination clinic for H1N1 will be at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, November 4. At this time they are not planning to offer the nasal spray.   I have had a few questions from parents. I spent quite a bit of time yesterday calling the county health department, the CDC (Center for Disease Control) and looking on the internet to answer a few of the questions we have received. One question was “Does the vaccine contain mercury?” I have been told there is a small amount in the form of thimerosol in the injections we will receive. This is a preservative. Injections and nasal spray that are packaged as single doses do not have this. However, they are not as readily available so we are not expecting to have these on our vaccination day. There was also a question about whether the vaccine was grown in human diploid cells. This vaccine was not. It was grown in hen eggs just as the regular flu vaccine is. That is why they do not want you to get this vaccine if you have a severe allergy to eggs.

I am sending the green consent forms for the vaccination, please sign and return even if you are declining the vaccination for your child. The left side indicates consent and the right side has the place that indicates you do not consent to the vaccine. I am also sending a letter, and a question and answer sheet from the county. We have copied parts of the information I took off the internet yesterday addressing the manufacturing and the two questions we received about mercury and growing the virus in hen eggs. I included the CDC website and phone number and the county information also has an immunization website listed.

This information is not to persuade or discourage you from having your child vaccinated, only an effort to help you be more informed. This is entirely a parent’s choice.

Picture retakes are next Wednesday. Send the pictures you do not want to keep back in when you request the retakes.

We may have a coach for the 4, 5, 6 grade boys basketball, but now it seems we need more boys. If you know a student from St. Luke’s or St. John’s school or Religious Ed that would be interested in playing please contact us. Also if your child is not signed up but would like to play there is still time.

There is a “Trick or Treat” Band Concert next Tuesday at RVMS. Band students please be responsible about getting times, what to wear and other information from Mr. Cavagnetto to your parents.

Just a reminder we do not have school next Friday, October 30. Halloween parties will be Thursday; each classroom will provide details to their students. Costumes are welcome but please refrain from bringing weapons, or wearing violent and particularly gruesome costumes. Be creative!

SEE YOU AT THE SPAGHETTI SUPPER SATURDAY NIGHT. Raffle tickets may be turned in that night.

Have a good weekend!
Cindy
